Introduction to Bio-Activity:
As of recent times, a lot of folks have been asking questions, and for guides on Bio-active Enclosures. How to set them up, how to drain them, how they work, why they work. I figured it was good and Time, that someone sat down and made a Guide! I have been meaning...
The Philosophy of Gutloading
Acknowledgements
I would like to thank Anthony Herrel and Walter Tapondjou for their helpful advice on where to look for relevant papers.
1. Introduction
Recently, it was suggested to me that our current gutloading practices might be wrong-headed. In particular, I...
Of course, all animals require water to survive, and it isn't as simple as placing a bowl in the bottom and calling it a day. In fact, with most chameleons this will have little, if any benefit. Most chain pet stores display their chameleons with a water bowl, and this can be misleading to the...
I free range my chameleons so I really have to pay close attention to when it’s time to lay eggs. I think one of the most important things is to have a gram scale and weigh her once a week. If she's gaining and you are still feeding the same amount of food then I figure she must have eggs. You...
It seems that humans generally come together in difficult times, but when those people are already together for a good purpose there is a special kind of bond that occurs. This forum has become an extended part of so many lives all for the benefit of some small, amazing little creatures. It...
I feel like not alot of people own flapnecks, their super low maintenance for a cham i really recommend them. Their not a large breed so they dont eat as much as other chams. People tried to tell me to feed it 18 or 15 crickets a day (absolutely not) dont listen to people tryin to tell you that...
It was only a "standoff" but even that much is great progress as far as this guy is concerned.
This is the most untrusting, anti-social, and just downright mean chameleon that I have ever heard about. I have given up on socializing this little guy. I would someday, however, like to be able...
Peeled raw mango is okay to include in your gutload on occassion. provides vitamin C, beta carotene, some B6 and vitamin K. However also high in sugars and higher in phosphorous than calicum and the peel is high in oxalic acid.
1 average fruit (about 336g), with skin and seeds removed...
Well sneaky Zeke did a late night shed several days ago. There are still to small spots of old retained shed. Will really have to watch my humidity. Has been dropping at night now that the heat is running. He has been teasing with some color. Doesn't show it much. Did catch some in some pics. He...
Below I am posting the information for the Major US pet supply chains in my area so we can send some letters of concern to those in charge. I don't know what will happen, but its worth a try. I am going to post my letter so you can see what I've written. I will be polite and professional and...
After seeing many questions about lighting requirements and schedules, I decided to show how Zaphod's lighting has been modified for the winter months. First, let me explain the basic set up. I have tried to make a more realistic heating and brightness through the use of timers and multiple...
Just a thought worth sharing:
I always recommend that a female be at least a year old before trying to breed. This is so her body is done growing before putting the burden of laying fertile eggs on her body. She may make eggs earlier but that does it automatically mean she is ready to breed...
I will begin this blog as a dictation of how I am raising my baby veiled chameleon, Marvin. This blog entry will be on the basics.

The following are instructions on how to candle your chameleon eggs, to check for signs of development, and what to expect closer to hatch date.
"Candling" is the technique of shining a light in the egg and looking for shadows or veins. It is often done with fertile chicken eggs as well for...
How do you know if you have a bad egg?
If you candle a freshly laid egg, you will not be able to see anything. The light will be yellowish, but there will be no shadows or veins yet.
Typically non-fertile or "bad eggs", will mold over and shrivel within the first week or two of being laid...
As this is my first Blog entry I will give some relevant background about who I am and the kind of chameleons I live with.
Personal Background:
Currently, I am a first year masters biology-student focusing on virology and infectious diseases (unfortunately, I am not studying ecology or...
“Come and play with me,” he says to the fox.
“I cannot play with you,” the fox replies. “I am not tamed.”
“What does that mean – to tame?”
“It means to establish ties. To me, you are still nothing more than a little boy who is just like a hundred thousand other little boys. And I have no need of...
After a few days of trying Zeke finally ate his first silk worm today. Only gave him one. Will continue to give him 1 or 2 a day until they out grow him. Now if I can just get him eating these phenix worms.
\
Poor baby Zeke is shedding for the first time since, we have had him, today. I can't believe I don't have my camera. I can't figure out how to add my phone pics. I do have one on my phone that sucks.:( I have put the fogger on for the day to help keep it humid and giving him warm mistings.
Good for gutloading, in moderation. Chinese cabbage (Bok Choy, Pak choi) provides Thiamin, Niacin, Carotene, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Riboflavin, Vitamin B6, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Potassium and Manganese. Similar to kale, in terms of oxalic acid content (some, but not too high like...
Getting use to each other. Did make the mistake of ordering FF along with other feeders. He wants to just eat FF all day. I have seen him get a few crickets but, hasn't tried any worms yet. Tried mealworms and phenix worms. Will keep trying them and not adding anymore FF for a week or two.
