Update on Luie’s Health Issues

Sorry to hear about your 2 chams' health problems.
Even though we know they age and get age-related problems it still saddens us.:(

Luie's bloodwork came back and showed no problems.

Sorry to hear about all of Luie's aging problems...but aging does lead to health issues in many of them. All we can do is give them the best life we can while we have them...and I know you do that.

Thank you so much Lynda.

Thank you. It just kills me to see them old and having problems.

Update on my boys

I am so very sorry to hear about your babies....I just love Luie and hate the fact he is still having trouble.....prayers being sent your way.

Thank you Sherri.

Luie is about the same. My vet is looking into a new med (Gabapentin) for us to try to see if it will help. Sid either had a stroke or showed a bad reaction to the Adequan injection for his arthritis. At first he was totally limp and just laid their but now he is starting to grip his branches and move around a little. Jr showed no reaction to the Adequan. He's had it injected twice. He's getting around ok but falls some. I have a catch net and/or a pile of towels under a short tree for all theses guys.

Oh Jann, I'm sooo sorry you're having to deal with all of these geriatric conditions, but something that we all are destined to have to deal with.... Be strong,,, you are doing ALL that can be done for them..... They are in the best care ever!!!!

Thinking of you during all of this!!!! Lisa

Sometimes no matter what we wish, want or do.... Life is just hard!!! ( I had to edit that last bit, sometimes I speak before I think)

I agree, but we're only destined for it if we're dedicated and lucky. Sometimes this forum is so hard when a cham you have admired so much dies. I was so shocked and sad when Padre died it managed to surprise me, because in a way he was my Parsons (that I'm never going to get....)
Now when I've been away for more than a few days I am always nervous the first time I log back in......
Sorry if that's a bit morbid. Really we all know they aren't going to live as long as a Galapagos Tortoise though. We also know how to keep them as healthy and happy as we can and get them to the ages where these age-related problems occur.........
Panthers and Veileds in the wild seem to me to be an unusual 'live fast, die young, leave LOADS of babies' sort of reptile :)
This means they've had less natural need to select for genes that help with managing longevity - just a thought of mine, no evidence........
I hope that you and your chams can keep inspiring us for a long while yet Jann (I really hope my luck keeps up!) . Just try and remember that these problems are a sign of your success. It's always a tragedy when a parent outlives a child. These are unusual 'children' though :D

It is so sad to hear about these creatures and their health problems as they age, but yours are in the best of hands, get the best care and they know how much they are loved, no doubt.....if I were a cham I would want you as my mom.....prayers being sent to all your babies.

Jann you are so good to do all you do for your Chams.
I myself take Gabapentin/ Neuroten to help control chronic pain. I do hope this will help Luie too. Keep holding strong you a very good cham mom.

David Buchan you make an excellent point.
I can recall when it was considered nearly impossible to keep a cham alive for more than a few months.
20 years ago, when I was admiring a Jackson's in a wonderful reptile shop, they told me that if I bought a Jackson's I would only watch it die.
Needless to say, I did not buy one til 3 1/2 years ago, after learning that they fare much better nowadays.
Thank God those earlier days are a distant memory--thanks to the hobbyists and researchers who shared their hard-earned knowledge.

True, we actually don't need to be that lucky these days thanks to the type of people we buy gutloads from these days :)
We just read about Fenix today as well though...a freak accident for a very healthy boy.... Just makes you remember how lucky we are when we have them, especially if we are lucky enough to have them healthy and content.

Hi Jann :)

How did the boys go at the vet the other day?

I've been thinking about them and sending lots of positive thoughts your way x

Thank you so much for all the support with all my guys health issues.

We will be going to Marathon (4 1/2 hours away) this Friday for the appointment with the specialist. I'll keep you updated. Thank you so much for the positive thoughts.

Jann were keeping all of your "guys" in our thoughts and prayers...
Who's going this trip?????

I know it's a long drive Jann, but one I know you would be more than happy to take if it means helping your guys.

Have you started Louie on the Neurotin yet?

Update on Luie and Sid

I took Luie and Sid to Dr. Mader today and when he was examining Luie he saw a little something in his vent and he pushed out his hemipenes and saw these sperm plugs. Between both hemipenes he probably cleaned out 6 to 8 inches of backed up infected sperm plugs. He thinks this was very painful for him and could be what was causing his leg problems. He also cleans out those places on both sides of his mouth and having me use the Zymox there and he opened the hole on his chin back up and flushed it and it was clean so he put a couple stitches there. He thinks we are now going to see improvement in Luie because those impacted sperm plugs were very painful. It will be great if Luie can start feeling better and enjoy some more life with us.

Dr. Mader doesn't think that Sid had a stroke. He said he has use the Adequan on allot of chameleons and never seen one react to it before but if Sid had a stroke he would not be showing this much improvement so he thinks the Adequan reacted on him. He thinks Sid looks good and he put him on Prednisone to see how he does with that.

Oh my that is a big sperm plug! Glad he got them out and hope it will prove to make a difference for Luie!

Hope Sid continues to get better as well

Ugh! That's a lot of old infected sperm - glad it's out and gone. (But why do I wish you had a picture?)

Great to hear good news about Luie and Sid, Jann! Looks like things are looking up!

Deb
