I wanted to try something a bit different, and decided apon a Crested Gecko. It showed up this morning, from LLL.

I just wanted to share a few pictures of "it" and "it's" set up.:) (camera phone pics..sorry, I was lazy today...)

Showing up in one piece is always a plus!

The housing. It will be placed on the lower half on the chameleon rack, which has uvb for the plant. The moon glo bulb will be placed at a distance to provide light, rather then heat.

Right out of the shipping container, it went straight for the food!

Still looking for a good name... although I'm not sure on the sex, a good universal name would be cool.

Thanks for looking,
Jay

Not to be a debbie downer but you need to put weight on that one quick, and get a fecal done.

Also, I just noticed in the last picture, the back legs look a bit rounded.. Ask people on Pangea what they think but it looks a bit odd to me.

I know people have had all of the cresteds they got from LLL come with parasites or just are thin.

Congrats on your normal buckskin! LOL

edit: wtf, Japanese/Chinese (whatever x-x) newspaper? o_o

Jay, nice lizard. Most captive hatched cresties tend to be male and most captive hatched gargoyles tend to be female.

I picked up 5 awesome cresteds from LLL one time. They are freaking Awesome and are now in a breeding group of mine. Some of the nicest red flames I have seen. Price was great. They have a lot of employees that breed and sell there animals there. Really nice stuff and great deals. I too am a little tired of the LLL bashing.

Nice crested Jay!> In the future if you decide you want another let me know. I have a few breeding groups cresteds and gargoyles that are really nice looking. Numbers are starting to grow here and I may need to actually get rid of some one day. :D

I wish I could keep them all.

Good looking little one. Branching out are you? I think a nice pait of URO's would be a great addition.... and I know someone who has a pair.:D:D:D:D

As for a possible name how about "Magkapalong tuko" that is tagalog (just for Nessa" for crested gecko.

Looks ok to me Jay. First pic refuses to load though. Neat setup, just be sure the log cant roll at all mate. Be aware that geckos can be disinclined to drink from the bowl (as a general rule, some will though) so a nice misting of ther glass each few nights will provide droplets to drink.
Enjoy your first? gecko! :)

Aww! How cute! I love their 'eyelashes'! There is a crestie in the shop where I get Amy's food and he sometimes sleeps in a plastic flower. He looks so cute in there! I nearly got got a crestie myself but I fell in love with my dear Lily and had to have her instead!:D

Excuse me for being concerned, Jay. Perhaps most of my friends were just very unlucky.

Does look skinny, love the colouring on him / her though, I have 2 cresteds, male and female, Ricky + lucy.

Do you know how to check the sex of your geckos? You just look 'Down Below' Ad if it has a bulge below the vent, its a male, if it doesnt, its a girl. Although the bulges usually take about 6 months to show.

Determining the sex of crested geckos is easiest on geckos that are over 6 months old. Male crested geckos will develop a very noticeable hemipenal bulge just below the vent. The hemipenal bulge develops on males at between 5 months and 9 months old. Females do not develop a bulge. The photos to the right show the difference between mature males and females.

Thanks JJ, "it" ate and drank quite a bit last night, and I was suprized how active they really are. It was drinking out of the bowl, and wasn't to interested in the mist on the glass(atleast not last night).

Thanks for your concern. btw...why are you quiting the Pangea Forum anyway?

Thanks Levi, it was sold as a "Red Flame" from LLL. The coloring in the first pic, seams to be his normal night coloring, he's quite bright, and very active. It's weight in the photo is decieving, and with the amount of food it's consuming I am not panicing. I got a gram scale coming on friday to monitor it's weight, to ensure were on track.

Thank you for the link aswell. It's also great to see you still on the forum eventhough your no longer keeping chams.;)

Take care buddy.

"Red Flame" from LLL.

I'll PM you about the pangea thing.

Flames should look like this (notice the patterns on her sides):

The patterning on the sides, the "flames" should be noticeable even when unfired. Now, I can't say it's not red, because unfired, reds do tend to look like buckskins.. once he gets fired up, he could be red.. but I don't see any flaming!

Nice looking crested, I dont think he looks too skinny but its always nice to keep an eye on them.

(is that Deadliest Catch on TV :p)

Nice Jay! Sorry I forgot to post sooner. Congrats man. I hope to get some myself soon enough.

New Addiction :)

Congrats on the new addiction Jay! You will not be able to have just one. They are wonderful for people like me who are up late at night. Something to watch when the chams go to sleep. Your set up looks great. I am also going to say that he/she is a bit on the thin side. I'm not saying it has parasites and I'm not bashing LLL Reptile. I've gotten some surprising chams there like a WC Tamatave. I'm just saying to keep an eye on it. I'd weigh it and keep checking the weight. I would not add another one to the cage until you see this one plump up a bit.

I've got a breeding group of sixteen Crested Geckos. I've got an album for my breeders in my profile section. I've sold quite a few offspring on Kingsnake.com. I've got over 60 babies I'm saving up now to sell at our local show in October. I've got dozens of eggs incubating. So I'm not unfamiliar with how they look when they are young. My juvies that size are very solid and filled out looking. They have quite a bit more meat on their bones. I feed my juvies Repashy Gecko Diet and crickets dusted with the same supplements I use for the chams. I feed my juvies crickets every day. I taper that off as they get older. My adults get crickets twice a week. I have a Reptisun 5.0 tube over the top of the cages. This gives them small amounts of UVB when they wake up about 8:00 pm. In nature they do get some UVB so I believe it should be provided. They regulate their own absorption by sleeping mostly hidden in foliage. I have to also say that it helps the plants look great and last a long time.

I'm sexing my juvies at three months. I use a loupe to do it (examine underside for femoral pores). I don't sell them until they are obviously sexable to anyone, experienced or not. I wait so I can decide whether I want to keep them for myself or not. I've been able to figure out that I am good at sexing them with the loupe. I've been 100% correct so far.

Welcome to a wonderful new addiction! These creatures are fascinating. I will often relax with a beer late at night before going to bed by sitting on the floor in front of my row of breeding cages. I put a very low light on so I can see them but not disturb them. The first thing mine do when they wake up is go drink water out of the bowl. I don't mist the adults any more. They all drink from the bowls. The multiple potted plants keep the humidity up. I do mist my juvies. I love watching the males chase the females around. I also love watching the females lay eggs. Mine lay in the potted plants. They almost always lay around dinner time before their cage mates wake up. They feel secure laying while everyone else is sleeping. I'm able to see the process and collect the eggs the next day when I clean the cages.

Sorry for the long post. I don't belong to any Gecko forums. I guess I need to spew my experience and love for them once and a while :) Catherine
