Update on Baby girl

Hey guys,

Okay. My vet / old boss / family friend was able to look at the baby girl, (Who's name is Penelope By the way ;) lets see who gets the reference.) She does have experience in reptile medicine before anyone goes on there. and please remember i have a very tight budget that i did not have when i got them, which means i can not take her to Oakland or Berkley where the closest reptile vet is.

She thinks the whole problem is the MBD, so she said keep with the calcium, she recommended keeping her on the ground, no climbing at all for a week since its both her back legs :/

she also wants the Uvb & Uva on her 24/7 as well as keeping her warmer. 75'ish all the time at a minimum she's recommending. she suggested a few different ways to give her a spot with no light so she can still sleep. i was thinking to put her small reptibreeze on its side, with a towel on the bottom and a pitch black cave for her to go in to sleep.

She suggested keeping her well hydrated, she said keep up with the compounded tums until i get the http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00112G29O/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AX0AX7GI0WVXM that was suggested.

We also did a very, very light wrap to keep her back legs still and safe at the same time.

okay... i think thats it. she also checked the male over, he looks good! yeah! so little god news >.< *sigh*

Oh, i also got a new batch of crickets, who will have the made wet gut load in the feeder post too.

It's always nice to get updates about chams that we know were having problems.

Since you hadn't mentioned anything about the male since your first posts, I was wondering how he is doing.
It's great to hear that he has recovered nicely.

Was it you who asked how to solidify bug gutload food?
If so, the answer is to use some agar agar powder http://www.amazon.com/Agar-Powder-4-oz/dp/B00015UC48

Did you ever peruse this post, particularly paragraph 4 complete with treatments, hospital cage ideas, etc. written by a vet and fellow chamkeeper ?

FWIW, I understand everything your vet has told you to do, except for the 24/7 lighting.
I do "get" that the idea behind it is to give her maximum UV exposure but
it would seem far more effective and reasonable to expose her to an hour or more of unfiltered sunlight daily, light her enclosure with the UVB during the daylight hours and then just let her rest fully at night.

Some chams just can't sleep when there is a light on and the stress of constant fatigue actually hinders recovery.

Please do continue to keep us up to date on her progress.
I'm rooting for her! :)

Right, So i have been trying to get her sunlight, i mean we are in california. my only concern is the wind! We are in fairfield, which is RIDICULOUS!! so as i can she has been out, but once the wind starts, especially since it's cold i bring her back in. (the boys able to handle it a little better so i leave him out a bit more) So If she can get at least an hour of sunlight go ahead and turn the light of at night? I was able to get a ceramic heater so i can keep her in the 75's at night too. do you think since she's on the ground i should find a heating pad and put on one side like my snake so she can go if she wants? since she wont be able to get right under and bask like she likes?

So far she has been adjusting to the tape well, i think she has been used to not being able to move them that is doesn't affect her as much. :( she uses her upper arms and tail like no tomorrow! little twit climbed the side of the cage yesterday!!

Thank you!!! I mean she seems to be doing better! More alert which is something!! *happy dance* I will keep you all updated! these next few weeks are going to be something else, i have school, and a house sitting gig (Yeah money to pay for her stuff!!) but she will go with me. i know the house im sitting will be quiet, and the room i am in gets really well light (and in vacaville! Which is less windy! Yeah!:D ) so im hoping that will help her a Lot! *fingers crossed*

Thanks for the link! I didnt even think of putting it on here! Im sorry!

Sorry about that---It's no wonder that made no sense to you. I apparently got distracted and thought I had posted this link there https://www.chameleonforums.com/what-metabolic-bone-disease-mbd-looks-like-how-happens-how-fix-95071

Cold?
Oh man, you Californians need to visit NY.
We'd love to have your cold temps in the 80s for a few more months of the year. ;)
I've been delighted that we've still gotten some days in the low 70s.

Is it less windy in the mornings?
If so, then that might be a better time for her to bask in the sunlight, if possible.

A lot of people turn the cham's regular cage into a hospital cage by putting it on its side to help minimize falling danger. If the cage is on its side, she should be able to get near enough to her daytime basking and UV bulbs.
She can have some wider than usual horizontal basking vines to help her maintain her grip.
Towels on the bottom can cushion her fall in case she goes screen climbing again.

Honestly, I'm not sure if the heating pad is a good idea.
I think the heat they put out can vary quite widely.
The ceramic heater would probably be better at night.
You do need to be careful it's not close enough to cause burns, and not to overheat or dehydrate her.

I think that the calcium syrup would help her to absorb calcium faster than the Tums, since the liquid is more easily absorbed--especially by a digestive tract that may not be working very well due to the calcium deficiency.

Also, don't mistake adding extra D3 to her diet now for something helpful. It isn't. Too much D3 does serious damage.
Her body will make its own much safer form of D3 with the sunlight exposure--and it will only make as much as she needs--no more, no less.
A brand new UVB bulb would probably be wise, too, if the one she has is nearing the 6 month mark.

Poor girl may not even be aware of the tape if her nerves are malfunctioning from the too low calcium levels.
That she is climbing at all is certainly a good sign.

Yeah, yeah, yeah :p after my 6mo stint in ID in winter w/o heating... I'll admit im a panzy. :p but it doesnt get to the 60's until 8-9, and with wind factor gets less :/ since sybil wants to keep her in the 75.

Thats the problem, its windy All. The. Time!! Seriously! We had a pool, had to fill it in because we never used it! The damned wind!!! >.< I mean when im home she'll go in my window (open) to get sun, unless its too cold. usually not *knock on wood*

Yeah!! Thats what I was thinking! :D

Right, im finishing my room tonight, so i have the lamps on a hanger, about a 1/2 inch away from screen top. will play with it to make sure it doesnt get to hot, im thinking in one corner, other little lower. ext, like what i have my boa's set up. basking, cooler, heat ext.

Yeah i finished ordering it today. was having issues with the card >.< *fingers crossed* it will help. on the digestive issue, she had that Mammoth stool / urate a few days ago, how often should she be having a bm ext? at the moment she's eating at least 3 lrg crickets, and 5 phoenix worms :/ i know not a lot, but she's still smaller too.

Right. It was looked through the straight calcium i have has D3  Not happy about that, so ordered Rep-Cal w/ this order. it says no d3 on all i can find online.

A brand new UVB bulb would probably be wise, too, if the one she has is nearing the 6 month mark.

Yeah, its not that old, maybe 2 months. last one i got crapped out really early :/

watching her today, i think she knows it, she was trying to use the back legs. but she's not stressing to much, (that i can see?) no open mouth, no body down / eyes closed.

Yeah im having problems keeping her down >.<

I GOT MORE POOP & URATE!!!

Only with animals, and babies would you be happy to say that.... *sigh*

So it's still not completely normal, but much less watery, the stool still looked, weird, it was dry, so im not sure if it was today or yesterday... :/

Pictures!!
Hospital cage set up, had to jerry rig the dripper, forgot my little one at home  but she has the dripper and spray bottle.

Once baby girl gets better she will be next to him, with the mist king in the middle with the same set up.

Oh My Gawd!!! I Can Not Belivie How good she looks today!!!

I hope im not jinxing it, but she's more alert, her eyes are less sucken in, she actually wiggled out of one of her taped legs, she's actually hunting the cage for the crickets!

OMG!!! Please keep your fingers crossed that she's finally on the up side!!! *happy dance* Got the calcium syrup in today as well, so will be starting that! :D

Hey guys!

I know it's been awhile! Just wanted to give an update on Penelope and derrick! Both are doing really well! Derrick has his cage all set up and loves it! Baby girl is still in the small cage, but the tape is off!! Today her grip was amazingly good!

Derrick I don't think is thrilled with the dubais weirdo that he is. He just leaves them in his bowl, but omg does he Love the superworms once a week! They are still about the same size, but to me they dont look thin, so thats a good sign. Keeping a really close eye on baby girl, she does have eggs that I am waiting for her to lay,

Baby girl seems to be developing this gorgeous lite, lite blue spot like shape almost on her body, ill try to upload a pic tomorrow.

Derricks bars are becoming more pronounced yellow orange, no other colors yet that I see, though idk how often he gets Mad. He's still mr. Mellow!
