Infrared Temp Gun?

Looking for an infrared temp gun, but not sure how much I should be spending. I know the professional one's are more expensive because they gather accurate readings at a further distance. Clearly this isn't a factor for my purposes. There are very cheap ones on amazon and ebay shipping from china usually. Anyone used these? Or am I better off spending an extra 20+ dollars.

Thank you

I've got this one and it works great, definitely worth the $30 if you have to spend that. Actually got mine for free at the expo when we bought our girl.

Keep in mind that they only read surface temps though!

Howdy, (A cut/paste of one of my old posts: https://www.chameleonforums.com/first-chameleon-critique-me-set-up-please-33169/#post304913)

A simple sanity check for basking temps is to stick the back of your hand right at the basking spot. If it feels just a bit warm then the temp is within safe margins. Digital thermometers are good for checking ambient temps but one of the really handy ways to check the actual skin/body temp is with a digital infrared temp gun.

I like the ones with distance to spot ratios of 6:1 or 8:1 or higher. 1:1 means that at 1" away you'll be measuring a 1" spot. It is handy to be a few inches away and still be looking at a spot smaller than 1" :).

Don't be overly impressed by the "laser" feature. It is just a laser pointer to aid in pointing at the right spot .

Ex: http://www.tempgun.com/main.html The PE-2 6:1 and the PE-1 is 1:1

If you buy the pet store brands your going to spend double or triple the money for no reason. Lowes or Home Depot sells the same thing for around $10.
