I would agree with 8-9 months. I upgraded from my reptibreeze to a 48 x24 x48 enclosure at about 6months though just to give him room to roam. Looking at my boy now at 9 months its hard to imagine him in the smaller cage, but certainly possible.
For your table issue consider using wire...
I am sorry to bump this depressing thread. A necropsy was never offered despite my expression that I would like to know the cause. I should have been more firm, however this was not my strongest moment.

Why couldn't the Kammers have a 48" tall cage? That would solve my dilemma.
