I just learned that someone I know no longer comes to this website. This is a person who bought a chameleon from me years ago, and who I sometimes share a spare office with when Im working not at my primary location. he's a nice guy, smart and I think his feeling forced off this forum is a darn shame.
He had posted a very reasonable question about using fish flake food as part of his gutload routine. He received very aggressive responses, what he described as "getting severely flamed". When he then in turn responded to those people, HIS remarks were removed yet those that "started it" went "unpunished". He tells me his response was not nasty, no foul language or other breaking of the rules. He merely answered the questions put to him, and defended his practises.
He feels one of those who flammed him is probably a moderator who didnt like seeing his answer, or the moderator is a friend of a flammer. His entire responses were simply removed, not just edited. Since we've both seen offensive comments removed from other peoples post without the entire post being removed, this heavy-handed approach felt clearly unfair.
I know this guy, and I believe his response was unlikely to be all that bad, no matter the provocation. Certainly it seems strange that his entire response would have been removed, rather than just some portion the moderator supposedly found offensive. Its unfortunately the moderator didnt even bother to inform that the post was removed or why.
He was so offended by the people who responded aggressively and rudely to his post, and worse by subsequently not being permitted to reply to them at all, that he no longer visits this site. Indeed, he warns others off posting on chameleonforums unless they enjoy getting bashed.
I have to say, this is very unfortunately. He is a good guy, who Im sure was making a positive contribution here.
It saddens me that a few hotheads, and possibly one-sided moderation, can give the whole forum a black eye. I do see quite a lot of people jumping down others throats. I do see a lot of "high and mighty" attitudes, sometimes from people who really do not appear to truly know what they are talking about. I do see people state things as fact that are truly still up to interpretation. I do sometimes see a lack of politeness.
From time to time, I may have done this myself.
Im not sure what to do about this. Apparently this whole episode happened quite awhile ago. I dont see him very often so I only just heard about it. I've tried to convince him to give this forum a second chance, but I doubt he will.
I wonder how many others are driven away?
I wonder what loss of insight and interesting varying ideas are lost to the community as a result?
