Flaming Rude Behaviour

I just learned that someone I know no longer comes to this website. This is a person who bought a chameleon from me years ago, and who I sometimes share a spare office with when Im working not at my primary location. he's a nice guy, smart and I think his feeling forced off this forum is a darn shame.

He had posted a very reasonable question about using fish flake food as part of his gutload routine. He received very aggressive responses, what he described as "getting severely flamed". When he then in turn responded to those people, HIS remarks were removed yet those that "started it" went "unpunished". He tells me his response was not nasty, no foul language or other breaking of the rules. He merely answered the questions put to him, and defended his practises.

He feels one of those who flammed him is probably a moderator who didnt like seeing his answer, or the moderator is a friend of a flammer. His entire responses were simply removed, not just edited. Since we've both seen offensive comments removed from other peoples post without the entire post being removed, this heavy-handed approach felt clearly unfair.

I know this guy, and I believe his response was unlikely to be all that bad, no matter the provocation. Certainly it seems strange that his entire response would have been removed, rather than just some portion the moderator supposedly found offensive. Its unfortunately the moderator didnt even bother to inform that the post was removed or why.

He was so offended by the people who responded aggressively and rudely to his post, and worse by subsequently not being permitted to reply to them at all, that he no longer visits this site. Indeed, he warns others off posting on chameleonforums unless they enjoy getting bashed.

I have to say, this is very unfortunately. He is a good guy, who Im sure was making a positive contribution here.

It saddens me that a few hotheads, and possibly one-sided moderation, can give the whole forum a black eye. I do see quite a lot of people jumping down others throats. I do see a lot of "high and mighty" attitudes, sometimes from people who really do not appear to truly know what they are talking about. I do see people state things as fact that are truly still up to interpretation. I do sometimes see a lack of politeness.
From time to time, I may have done this myself.

Im not sure what to do about this. Apparently this whole episode happened quite awhile ago. I dont see him very often so I only just heard about it. I've tried to convince him to give this forum a second chance, but I doubt he will.

I wonder how many others are driven away?
I wonder what loss of insight and interesting varying ideas are lost to the community as a result?

Another very popular reptile classifieds site has the same issues - and drives me nuts to see the way people are treated there. My very first post there - a wanted ad for black rat snake morphs - became a hit for moderators who posted I was shady, a scammer, etc etc because I had a "NEW" join date and copied and pasted from google a picture of a BR (I included in the post it was not mine)

In any case - I have seen this happen to a lot of people, many of these people being "inexperienced kids" or what I would say is "the next generation of herpers!" :D

Whether they are young or old, new members and inexperienced ones have to be treated kindly in their attempts to attain info, even if they ask instead of searching for the answer themselves. Even if it means the more experienced members end up answering the same questions many times over - which they often do. (thanks to these guys!)

We should WANT and STRIVE to engage eager minds seeking to heighten their understanding of these often misunderstood creatures. If we keep being tactful and respectful, and trading our stories and studies, and keep the karma rolling - there will be a bright future for our little guys!

Good post once again I think this is an important topic to touch on.

I agree. If people can't give good advice in a friendly way they shouldn't give the advice in the first place. Friendly advice or thoughts are better recieved so it is logical to be nice if you want your advice to be taken. It might be harder work, and it might be frustrating at times. But its the people who do it that make this forum what it is. Not just knowledge, but lack of arrogance is crucial.

I wanted to bounce ideas off people trying to improvise with what I have. It didn't go well. The conversation ended up with someone getting snippy about ventilation (which wasn't even the topic of my question). The other conclusion was that I am too poor to own a chameleon. I'm just gonna jerry rig my MacGyver setup in silence from now on and not post about it anymore. :(
