I have a new problem with my chameleon. I've changed vitamins to calcium + vit.d3 and herptivite multivitamin. He eats a variety of food and drinking water every day.

After each meal, his eyes are very swelling and the eyes appears bloody eyelid, after a while that disappears and eyes looks normal. When eyes are swollen he rubs them on the branch.

This is the first problem that is not solved (copyed from topic swollen crests)

Yemen Chameleon
1.5 yr old male
Terrarium 90x90x40cm
Lamp exo terra 6% UVB 60mm
real creeper plants and vine branches
humidity 50%

For the last 6mths has been eating only superworms, hasn't wanted anything else . Before that period it was fed locusts and acheta domestica from nature.
Twice a week it gets nekton reptile color. Drinks water every other day.
Spends plenty of time out of the terrarium or outdoors on a branch in the sun. In the last month I have noticed crest swelling and swelling of the cheek behind the eye . One side of the comb is a little more swollen than the other .. swelling is soft to the touch. I haven't been able to find any text about the swelling crest. If anyone knows what could be the cause of this, or / and what would be the right treatment and cure please let me know. Thank you!!

My bet is that he is developing an infection. It is common for the turrets to swell like that when veileds get a sinus infection. Your best bet is to take him to a good vet with chameleon experience. Even if it is not a sinus infection, the vet can help you figure it out and correct the problem.

One thing to note, you said that you have been supplementing with calcium with d3 and multivitamin. Is this right? If so, you should change up your supplements to the following:

Calcium without D3 at every feeding
Calcium with D3 2x a month
Multivitamin 2x a month

I dust with the calcium with D3 one Sunday, then a multivitamin the next Sunday, and keep alternating Sundays in this way.

thank you for reply .. I live in Croatia and it's very hard to get to the vet for reptiles. My vet gave him therapy five days 3x daily eye drops Maxitrol ( dexamethasonum, neomycinum, polymyxinum B) therapy didnt helped him.

Also, you said that he drinks water every other day. Why? Are you only offering water every other day? He should be offered PLENTY of water EVERY DAY, via misting and/or drippers.

These are great, but should only be used once every 2 weeks. You really need to find and use a calcium supplement with NO D3. Otherwise you are doing a great job.

the last three months he drink plenty of water every day.. in past he refused to drink the water every day.. he olso refused to eat antyting exept phobas.. now he eats phobas, roaches and crickets.

If it is an eye infection why his eyes are swelling just after a meal? looks like it hurts... Why the crests is swollen for more than half a year? Do you have any helpful advice for me and my vet who has no experience with reptiles?

I feel silly even asking this, but how much vitamin/calcium dust are you using? Is it possible that there's too much dust and it's getting in his eyes? I can't think of why his eyes would only swell up only after eating, that is odd. Is there any discharge from his eyes when they're swollen?

I think I don't give him too much dust. I plunge the worm in the dust, and how much remains on worm he eats.. one or two worms with dust once a week ..

That looks like an allergic reaction, but to what? Almost makes me think it's a D3 issue.

You said he sometimes gets food from the wild....is there anything on that food like chemicals?

I'm not a botanist and damn near no good with houseplants even so you'll need somebody else to help with the plants.

I'm fairly certain what you're seeing with his eyes is the natural flushing and cleaning he's doing under his fused eyelids. Especially if they return to normal after a few minutes. Normal to see every once in a while and usually accompanied with rubbing them on a branch. If happening frequently, make sure there's no source of dust or other debris that could be irritating them including powdered supplements (being fed from above). As for his casque, they store fluids there and a well hydrated veiled will have a plumper casque which may be exaggerated since his leans to the left a bit. Just keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't get any worse or his behaviors change.
