Panther

Why do they call them Panthers? Is it because of the way they move? They look like a Panther Cat stalking prey.

yes from what i know is that they were referred to as panthers when they first became available in pet stores, because a lot of their movement resembles those of a cat a lot of the time as you have probably seen by now.

Furcifer is the genus that panther chameleons belong to and is derived from the Latin word furci meaning forked, this was a reference to their feet (Although all chameleons feet or forked???). Pardalis is the Latin word for Leapord or spotted like a panther which refers to their markings. Got that from wikipedia.
