New to chameleons

Adapting the basking bulb is a great way to go about it!

I find myself changing the bulbs from the seasons too. 🙂

You've put a lot of care and attention into your set up, and I'm sure your little cham will be well taken care of. We all live and learn, and the mistakes along the way are just lessons to help better thrive.

You've got this!

Thanks so much! This was very encouraging! I hope my lil girl will live a long long life! You’ll probably be hearing from me soon!

She’s here!! Thanks everyone for the help!

I’ve had my tortoise for 6 years and I remempmber when I first got him he just hid in his shell and didn’t eat or move for a few weeks. How long do you think Marge will be scared of me? I she is hiding behind her laying Ben hanging on to the screen right now.

It's about the same for a cham to settle in. If she hasn't eaten yet she should get hungry after about 3 days and go for the food. Do you know her age?

This is one of the best blogs for trust building.

Time and patience...
Ok thank you. The breeder said in the description “she is a calm and sweet juvenile chameleon.” So I think in a couple weeks I will have her trust. Framschams sent us with silkworm that I will use to gain her trust. She is 4 months old.

Another question it isn’t very hot in Marge’s basking spot right now. It was 85 yesterday and it is 77 now /: idk how to make it go up. Any one know. She just started to eat tho!!!

Also I just caught her gapping and idk why. I know that it can be because they are to hot but she is also on her basking branch as a dark brown color to absorb heat. She is not doing it now but was when I walked in. I did read on an earlier thread that some one else’s young chameleon was gapping like mine and bc it was to hot bc they were young. (Marge is 4 months old)

Post pictures!! Posting pictures of the behavior would make an assessment of what is going on easier.

77f is actually the perfect basking temperature for a female vailed, I've never let my basking area be any higher than that for my little girl. Any higher temperature is likely why she's gapping... they're a bit like hot dogs (the animals, not the food 😅) panting... they can't sweat; so, they thermo regulate through their mouth...

4 months is still when you want to feed her as much as she can eat. But once she's settled and eating well, you'll want to start gradually feeding her less. So that after about 6-7 months she's eating about 6 bugs every other, or third day.

By keeping the temperature and feeding schedules down for a female, it helps prolong their lives. The amount of stress of laying eggs for a cham is tremendous, and if you can prolong the process it keeps them healthier...

Screen crawling is normal for a setting cham....
