New to chameleons

That's awesome, you're killing it, my friend!

I just had to buy an air conditioner for the chams this weekend... Which is completely absurd to have to pay to be cold in Canada. 🤣 Trying to keep my ambitant temperature around 19c/66f in the day with a drop to 15c/59f at night... When we keep the females constantly at this temp, along with reducing feeding at 6 months it helps stop egg production.

Littlefoot's (below) is almost 18 months old now, hasn't laid eggs, and is super healthy with the help of this forum chamily.

Keep us updated!

Also Marge is now basking right under her grow lamp. Is this normal? I’m concerned she could get heat burns on her back. Like her head is touching the screen. I don’t k no w what to do.

Although not ideal. Grow lights can be used as a heat source or basking light. You have got to treat them as a normal basking light and give space from between the basking light and branch to prevent burns, as stated earlier. I have used grow lights as a basking light a couple of times without issues. If you have got a choice though choose a light made for basking.

Marge has once again stopped eating. She goes through spurts. Without eating but I just don’t know why and her roaches are pooping all the food I gut loaded them with :/ HEEEELLLPPP

She's likely getting to the age where you can cut back from daily feeding to every other day. Are you only feeding roaches? Will she take a treat bug?

Animals eat, and eat, and eat.... And then eventually have to 💩. 🤣 ... As first time chameleon (or reptiles in general) owners; what we're not told is, we have to care for the bugs they eat too. I almost think the bugs take up more room than the chams, especially on delivery day. 😅 . All the extra bins to swap out for clean ones, and then where to keep them. Then I go out of my way to buy the appropriate fresh fruits and vegetables for them too... On the up side; I think they've secretly made me eat healthier, by trying to feed both the bugs and chams healthy.

Yea I haven’t given her a treat bug yet. I was going to give her horn worms but bc they grow so fast I didn’t want to feed her those yet bc she isn’t eating all the time so it’s unpredictable. She does eat straight roaches. The dubias are in a container with hiding spots and each night before I feed Marge I put a block of blended carrots
Apples
Sometimes orenges
Today u used turnip greens (what I feed my tortoise) and then I usually pick out the ones near the food to feed her. But what i have noticed is over a couple days the dubias disappear. I put seven in there about 3 days ago and there are 4 in there now. I will cut back to like5-6 feeders and every other day.

Oh yea and the roaches almost feel like pets themselves. I feed them put them in her feeding cup and say “come on guys we’re going to the forest. It’ll be quick”

If you're scared horn worms will get too big, wax worms are a good treat option too. They can even eat the wax moths, if they pupate. I notice if I feed mine the same thing for too long they start to get disinterested in their food, and then I have to switch it up and feed them crickets for a month to get them back to being interested in other foods. Roaches are hard to get in Canada, and sell out quick. So I mostly feed mine BSFL as their staple diet. I've been able to feed them blue bottle flies and silkies more recently too, but they don't last as long as BSFL/crickets/roaches... It's good to change things up every now and then, if you can.

That makes sense. My tortoise eats a different type of green each week tk it makes sense why Marge would too. I’ll get some wax worms and see if I can get her back to eating roaches. How do you feed crickets. Bc I used to have toads and the crickets would jump everywhere and in a chameleon enclosure wouldn’t she not be able To find them bc they hide everywhere? They also can escape my feeding cup whereas the dubias or worms can’t.

I use this feeding dish; it's nice because the base stays stuck to the screen, but you can take the cup part out to wash/fill with bugs. I also feed 1/4"-1/2" crickets, because I find that the bigger ones are the ones that can escape. My little girl is also scared of the bigger crickets. Once they're big enough to chirp they start to creep her out and she wants nothing to do with them... 😅

Others on the forum have used this one and said it also keeps them contained, but smaller feeders can escape through the gap between the screen.

Shooting gallery

Just remember wax worms are treat bugs and super high in fat, so you don't want to feed them as a staple diet. Staple feeders are roaches, crickets, BSFL, and grasshoppers. BSFL have the added bonus of being high in calcium, so you don't have to dust them before eating, unless it's the multivitamin/vitamin D day. They're also fun for the cham to hunt once they turn into flies.

She’s still not eating :( I put it up next to her basking spot and put red duct tape on it to be more attractive bc before it was clear. I know she won’t starve but I really wish she w out of eat.

She hasn't since May 8? Did you try a different feeder bug?

Do you have a recent picture of her & the cage? Has she pooped at all?

Yes I think she hasn’t eaten since then. She doesn’t look skinny and I did get her super worms. Nothing has changed. Her humidity has gone up I little and I wonder if that might be it. It was in the low to mid 50s and now it’s in the high 50s low 60s. Yes she still poops. I might put her old feeding cup in bc it was bright yellow and she ate out of it a lot but the bugs sometimes could escape. I don’t remember her eating out of the clear one that I put in. I also wrapped the new one in red duct tape.
