New Chameleon Mistakes

So I bought my first chameleon (Jackson) and lost him in less than two months. I did not want to rush back into the same mistake so I have been keeping a zoo med reti breeze cage 18x18x36 for four weeks without any animals.

I have a 40W heat bulb and 13W UVB

The top ten inches of the cage stay at 80-85 degrees with 40% humidity

Mid to lower 75 -80 with 70% humidity

That is twelve hours a day -- I mist with a monsoon starting 1 hour after lights come on - then 4 times a day for 60 sec or so.

I have natural plants starting about 3/4 for top of cage and down with plenty of branches.

During evening temp drops about 5-7 degrees all around and top humidity increases to about 70% with lights off.

SO do I get another chameleon? Is the set up correct and what reptile would be another option if I do not want to go with a chameleon?

It could be that your set up had nothing to do with it and he had underlying issues when you got him that got worse. Getting another chameleon is really up to you. I think I would get another seeing that you have everything set up for one. Maybe try a Panther or a Veild. They are good starter chameleons and your set up sounds ok for both of them.

I agree with Carol. Although I do not know how jackson's environment should be, but judging how you put thing, it sounds like you have a wonderful setupfor a cham.
