I'm not a bad Panther owner am I?

at one time or another, i think we all make mistakes on how to care for our pets.
The only thing that makes you become a bad owner is the unwillingness to change for the sake of your animal.

Now you know that exposing your chameleons to such setting can cause them heavy stress (regardless whether or not they are showing stress symptoms).

If you put them in those situation again knowing the fact that it does them no good, then I have to concur with others that your selfishness makes you a bad owner.

Live and learn, man.

Ok here's the story, a couple days ago I replied to a classified ad. In this reply I stated that I take my Chameleon with me to the swapmeet. Some others replied to me that they thought I was crazy. They made me fell bad. D

i recently got some stick to by some forum members..they think me taken mine out for 20 mins every day is selfish..i wouldn't do it if my yemen was stressed.does he look stressed to you?

I strongly disagree with this kind of attention getting mistreatment of an animal who would be much happier at home in his territory.
Are you doing it for the well being of the chameleon .... or to draw a crowd around yourself?

some chameleons tho are just as happy on your hand than they are in there enclosure.as long as its not getting manhandled,its not stressed and its nice and warm i cant see the problem

Don't come here asking a question and expect to get nothing but positive feed back, ESPECIALLY, when his actions are extremely questionable, and his motives are obvious..but intended to be hidden.

frankly a PET is a responsibility. not a toy, or a show thing. It is YOUR duty to care for your animal in the best conditions and with the best intent on ITS care.

This is an animal that is not domesticated like a cat/dog/ferret. no matter what animals that are considered are exotic are not well suited outside enviroments mimicking there original habitat. Taking any animal into a crowded enviroment is an extreme risk, as you loose all controlability.

SO, as i said earlier, i would never, will never do what has been described as i wish for the best care of my animals. is this person a bad cham owner, only time will tell if his animals life is significantly shortened from stress, chaotic enviroments and other misc variable factors that could come into play.

not a very stress free enviroment as some are outside, and some have up to 200-1000 people at many of them.

oh..well in that case i dont agree with what hes doing..its 1 thing taken him out to show a couple friends at home but taken him to somewhere that has lots of activity is surly going to stress your chameleon out no end,

Sure every cham is a little different in temperment. But my question has gone unanswered - how does he KNOW the cham is happy and enjoying that situation? It would have to be a very unusual chameleons to be happy there.

I think I would be stressed by being at that swapmeet crowd, never mind my chameleons.

Certainly I wouldnt take even my happiest friendly panther (who likes to sit on my shoulder, holding an ear, but who never goes far from his cage in that manner) into that environment.

yeah i mean every cham is different, but the only time i actually remove mine from his home is when i take him in my backyard for sun... never for a car ride.

I do agree with you SoCaliSon.

This forum is known internationally for containing thoughtful, expert advice from rational, experienced, chameleon keepers. This forum is highly regarded, not just in the chameleon community, but in the internet community as a whole, and is thought to be one to emulate and admire. Most of the new folks who post here for the first time are genuinely seeking help, and are opening a small part of their heart and lives to us in a trusting way.

When the moderators briefly closed this thread I felt guilty and a little ashamed for having taken part in some personal things. I should probably edit my earlier post but will leave it as is.

Here's another thought, on topic more or less, concerning chameleons who seem to "enjoy" public appearances:
We have done quite a few rescues, and have found that the most lethargic, "easy going", chams tend to have underlying health issues. Usually it's parasites, and most commonly coccidia. There may be some healthy chameleons that don't seem to respond to unusual situations, but they are probably rare. And there are times when a chameleon is too terrified to move. Their main defense to an unrecognized threat is to remain still, is it not? A chameleon that is "calmly" sitting on one's shoulder is not necessarily having a good time.

Gesang - You nailed it.... This owner may very well be mis-interpreting "calmness" for "so terrified" that he cannot move.... They do freeze up like that when they feel threatened. My advice - leave your panther at home.
