I am new to this forum and just saying hi. I am just getting back into the hobby. I have about 10 years experience with several different chameleon species but I have not had a chameleon in close to 10 years. Just got my cages set up and received my lights in the mail. Now just waiting to find the right chameleons. I am trying to track down some healthy Deremensis and/or Carpet chameleons. I look forward to future discussions.

Robert

Hi Robert and welcome to the chameleon forums. This is a wonderful place to learn about chameleons. I bet allot has change in 10 years. I know I have seen allot of change since my daughter and I started keeping in 2004.

You want have to look very far for carpets. One of our members here Kevin is the carpet king. You'll find him here: https://www.chameleonforums.com/members/dooley1/

I also saw Paul (showjet) had a gorgeous pair of Deremensis in the classifieds here awhile back. I'm not sure if he sold them or not but you can contact him here: https://www.chameleonforums.com/members/showjet95/

Thanks Jann. I will see if I can get on a list from Kevin. Also I will see what Paul has. I have seen some of Paul's posts. He has some amazing chameleons. One thing that has changed in the last 10 years is that there is a lot less chameleon species readily available. Thanks again

Thanks Carol! I was completely addicted last time. I am trying to control myself a little this time but we will see what happens .

Hi and welcome. This is the most amazing group of people and the most helpful resource available. I have learned so much in the few months I have been here.

Thanks Nicky. I read several posts before I joined. I was impressed with all the knowledge and how many chameleon species are being worked with.

Welcome to the boards! There is always good stuff to read here. Good luck in your quest to find the right chameleons.

Welcome to the forum :)

A lot has changed in 10 years, since the internet has made it possible for
cham keepers to exchange info which has never been available from any book.

I got my first chams (flapneck and Jacksons) in the 70's

Back then, no one knew a thing about how to keep them alive for more then
a few months.

I got them from an exotic pet store near Capital Hill in Washington, DC.
Even the store owner knew nothing! I remember him telling me they come
from Mexico, and require a 'desert like" environment.
So I had them in glass terrariums, with rocks and sand as a substrate!

I called every zoo I could think of that keeps reptiles and was always told the same thing, you CANT keep them alive in captivity!!

I even went to Cornell U library to find the only known book on chams, but
it was in German!!

I did manage to learn a great deal before they died though simply by observation.

Proper husbandry for chams was a slow learning process for years, even when the internet was born.

Wow, first chameleon in the 70's that must have been tough. My first chameleon was a Carpet chameleon in 93. I kept it in a glass terrarium and I lived about 2 months. My second was a veiled I nursed back to health after he developed MBD. After that I was quite successful but it will be nice to have a place to share information with knowledgable people. I can't wait tell I find a couple I want.

Welcome and it is true this is a great resource for information. In addition to being knowledgable, the people here are so willing to share information and help folks who are new learn as much as possible to keep their pets happy and healthy.
