Earl being treated for an abcess

My 5 year old Melleri went to the vet on Wednesday and we found a abscess hiding in the kink of his tail. They cleaned it and I am impatiently waiting for a culture to come back.

Just to give a quick back round on Earl, he has been battling kidney damage brought on by major neglect from is previous owner. His tail had burns all the way to the bone when I had received him. They were treated and all was well so we thought.

The Vet believes the infection is systemic and this could possibly be adding on to the edema he's been battling.

This is what the vet has him on

Ceftazidime 140mg/ml .04 ml IM every 72 hours,

salvidine on the opening twice daily

Lactulose for 14 days (to help reduce ammonia in the blood).

I guess I'm just looking for some reassurance I'm doing whats best for him. To be honest it hurts my heart to know he's feeling bad.

(I spelled abscess wrong in the title lol this is my life)

I can't help you with the medication, but just want to wish you and him lots of luck for a speedy recovery! Sounds like your guy deserves to live the rest of his life in happiness after the neglect, so I hope he recoveres well from everything.

Jessica, I sorry to hear that Earl has an abscess. I don't know much about the meds except for Ceftazidime is an antibiotic and they can be bad on the kidneys. I'd keep him well hydrated. How well do you know you’re vey? Is he/she experienced with chameleons?

I hope Earl improves for you quickly.

Thank you every one for the kind words. Earl is so dear to my heart.
I think this ordeal is bothering me more then him lol.He is strong and in good spirits and still begging for super worms ;)

Hi Jann,

Dr Brick was highly recommended to me by the reptile department at UC Davis, she is so good with chameleons especially Melleri. I really like how she handles Earl and I think the clinic loves him ALMOST as much as I do lol.
We (the vet and I) hate to even use antibiotics until I get the culture back but I couldn't just let the infection fester especially if it has spread:( We also decided to give him Sub Q fluids to help his hydration.

Luckly Earl is spoiled she says my ocd on watering him could be what pulls him through. I'm sure he wont mind extra showers.

Thank you for the support it means a lot to me.
