Dubia Infestation

I just had some baby Dubia's escape. I know everyone says they can't infest but I have a woodstove for heating that gets really hot. I need to be reassured that they can't infest a house in Canada because I am really worried! It turns out the little buggers can climb plastic rubbermade bins!

How warm is the house?

I've got Dubias reproducing (slowly) in a room that's only about 74F
seems to me this suggests they can indeed potentially infest a warm house, especially if there's food and water easily available.

Mine dont climb the plastic bin they are in (have a lid on it just in case anyhow). Was your bin new? smooth on the sides insides?

It gets way to cold for them to survive in canada so dont worry.

The house is about 20 C all around and warmer in the room with the woodstove, which isn't on all the time. The bin has pretty smooth sides, but the little ons can still climb it.

buy a couple house geckos and let them run around your house. they'll eat em

try putting a ring of vasoline around the bin so they can't climb out.

I'm sure they can infest a house, they would die outside. Think about it, like said above your going to keep your house warm and they will eventually find food and water.

Babies can and will climb bran new rubbermaids, I've even seen juvies and adults do it, yes I've seen adults climb new bins.

Pit package tape around the top, they can't clmib it! No vasaline or any other crap. Ian hagerty the roach ranch told me this is what he does and it works great!

I have put packaging tape around it now. For a week though before I had a corner open!!!!! That is why I am worried.

Ugh that's creepy. Isn't one of their benefits the fact they can't climb plastic? I keep mine in a closed bin with cutout on the lid with some mesh, so they can't get out, but it makes me uncomfortable knowing they could be able to escape in theory.

Yep, big selling point. Typically only the babies will climb, its rare when I see adults and juvies and they have a very hard time and fall a lot!

i've never had dubia escape..... unless i dropped one... and after 18 months living where I live i haven't seen any investing and i've dropped adult females... There isn't much food for them to eat... so.... being where you live they might not grow real fast... as Sandra said.

I wouldn't worry unless I see one around. Man, it's hard to type on the phone with those little keys, looks like a little kid wrote it lol.

OMG how do you breath!? are you on the praries? buy a humidifier! your skin and nostrils will thank you for it!

Buy a roach hotel or three, put them in nice warm dark places. Or that sticky peanut butter scented paper for catching mice. That will help reassure that if any are living in the house, they are likely to get caught and die.

I tripped while holding a container full of hisser nymphs. They went everywhere. the sticky paper eventually caught those I didnt. Or at least most of them. Any few others probably died of thirst. Anyhow I slept better thinking the sticky trap was there. I now always have one. takes care of the occassional escaping cricket.

0% is a guess, the air is just really really dry. Sometimes if I get nosebleeds I run the humidifier. I will use sticky traps, thanks for the suggestions.

Matte Finish

The bin had a matte finish. The bins must be completely smooth. Like Glass smooth. Not pretty smooth or somewhat smooth. Even on smooth sides if it is misted with hard water the mineral deposits over time can give them something to grip as can dust and dirt accumulation over time. Always use lids for everything. People forget its not only important to keep animals in but unwanted things out. They will not infest your home in Canada.
