Devastating Losses this Week :(

This last week has been a horrible one for me with regard to my collection. I lost my beloved adult Melleri Layla on Wednesday night. She was in great shape until last Sunday. Sunday she looked great but refused to eat. Monday her color was horribly distressed. I called and got a vet appointment for Tuesday. She faded rapidly from there and died at the vet while he was trying to save her. He did a necropsy and we suspect that Salmonella was the culprit. That can't be confirmed until culture tests come back. The necropsy showed that all her organs were inflamed which means the infection had become septic. He had started her on antibiotics but it was too late. I'll post an updated post on her in the Melleri forum after test results come back. I was in tears for days over that loss.

Then Friday night my husband and I woke to a smell that was filling our house. It was an acrid smell coming from our heat vents. We've had a cold snap here. The furnace was making noises too. We shut it down and went back to bed. The next morning the smell was gone but I discovered a number of my small Montanes where dead. The house was a little cold but I've gone to winter cage heating so all the cages had proper temperatures. I found a dead male Laterispinis, a dead female Uthmoelleri and three dead Thamnobates (one male and two females).

The only thing I can think of is that the fumes coming from the vents were toxic enough to kill off more sensitive species. When the furnace repair man came he said all the wiring around the furnace motor was fried and a bunch of nearby plastic was burnt. We were lucky that we shut the furnace off. Our house could have burned down. The plastic must have been somewhat toxic. Nothing else seems to have been affected except the small Montanes. I'm lucky that I had my new Blue Crown Conure covered for the night. Birds are very sensitive to toxins and chemicals. I'm also lucky my Uthmoelleri hatchlings were in one of my two main chameleon rooms. The vents are closed in those rooms because it gets too hot with the heat on due to all the basking lights. The Montanes that died where all in my dining room where the vents were open.

Anyway, it's been a totally crappy week. I'm numb. Numb from losing these incredible creatures and numb with cold. My cages all have heat but our house is without a furnace in freezing temperatures until later this week. I'm using every trick in the book to get the house temperature up to 58 degrees. Ugggghhhhh :(

Catherine-I am so very sorry to hear this. Fumes scare me to death. I won't even use Fabreeze, and one night when I burned plastic on my glass top stove I completely panicked. I am very glad it did not affect more of your collection. Also sorry to hear about Layla, Mellers work their way into your heart.

I am so sorry to hear about you losing so many wonderful chameleons all at once. Just losing one tears me up for days. My heart goes out to you. It is -5 here so I know what you mean about trying to stay warm.

Catherine; I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I can only imagine how you must feel. I read your post, blogs and watched you video about Layla and know just how attached you were to her. My heart goes out to you. Jann

we give you our fullest sorrow....that is very tragic...indeed every keepers worst nightmare... but think of it more as a celebration of the wonderful life they lived with you. im sure they were happy chams .

I'm sorry for your many losses. Thank you for sharing your story. It's something we all need to be mindful of.

Sorry Catherine, I read your post and my heart goes out to you. I hope you can have some closure and be strengthened to continue on. Keep warm!

I can't believe our beloved Layla is gone. I know how awful you must feel, having been through it myself. How could you have known? (Septic infections even take over humans sometimes before they and their doctors realize what's happening.)

You know people are going to be looking for her, and asking for her, at the next Puyallup breeders expo. She was such a great lady people just fell in love watching her. My heart really goes out to you for all your losses this week.

So sad! what a blow this must be for you.
But Im glad you didnt loose your bird, the other chameleons, your house or YOU for that matter to the fumes and potential fire hazard.

Sorry to hear. Still, look on the bright side, not as devestating as the loss of your house and/or your lives.

hey paradise girl, SOrry to hear about your losses.

after speaking with my brother who is in the fire academy/ working as a paramedic for the FD.. he told me that if i went into a fire to save my animals.. it would be pointless..

the fumes/smoke of burining house releases enough carcenogens in 2 mins to kill people...your heater could have even been leaking carbon monoxide into the house ..but you wouldn't know without a Cmonoxide test.

pets rarely last more then 30 seconds depending on their size.

it is unfortunate considering what you loss, but think about what you didn't loose, your home, your lives, and your alot of your other animals...

Wow, that is terrible, Catherine. I'm sure you know these things happen to the best of keepers, though it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. My family's furnace just went out on Friday as well, but it sounds like a different type of problem (I've been struggling to keep my collection warm also). Best of luck with the rest of them

My deepest sympathies. I can relate since the wound is still fresh over my loss of Arnold, my first chameleon.

Catherine, that's terrible news :(. It wasn't that many years ago when one of the forum member's Parson's died from something going wrong with a houshold gas water heater. Chameleons, unfortunately, could probably replace Canaries in coal mines .

Wow that would have me with my head in the oven !!! I know they are sensitive but wow that's incredible . I'm really sorry for this horrifying event. I have smoke detectors in the cham rooms but now that i read about your misfortune thinking maybe it would be a good idea to add a co detector .Again sorry about this awful chain of events Catherine .

ciaf, there is no garuntee it was even CO, It could have been the fumes from melting plastic. it could have put something off.

its really one of those unpredictable events that just really is a kick in the face.
