Having gone through something similar, my thoughts go out to you and yours. Air quality is something that isn't stressed enough in today's advice for new chameleon keepers. I recall back in the early '90's, I was told to treat them as if they were parrots, no teflon, no smoking, no air scents etc..around them at all.
I'm still worried about effects from long term mold exposure, but until they start acting funny again, I will keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

Catherine, I really cant say anything more than what everyone has already said. Every time this thread pops back up it brings up the feeling that I had when I read your original post. When I first read it I literally got sick to my stomach. What a sad situation
You seem like a tough woman, hopefully you will bounce back quickly from this. I can only imagine how you feel. Thankfully you, your husband and the rest of your collection were unaffected.

Thank you all for your kind words. It does help A LOT. The loss of Layla in particular is so very hard, since I could handle her and bond with her. We spent a lot of time together outside last summer. She would "run" to see me to see if I had a roach treat for her. I adored the smaller ones I have lost but could never really handle them much. Layla was a once in a lifetime experience
Today our house is 55 degrees. I'm trying to get space heaters that don't have PTFE (Teflon) in them to heat the house until we get the furnace fixed. They had to order a new motor. PTFE is deadly for birds. And I'm not sure I want anything around ME that is deadly to birds. Or the chameleons. Chameleon lungs are very similar to bird lungs. It's supposed to be in the 18 degree range at night all week long and never above freezing during the day. So for now my thoughts are occupied with keeping us all warm and safe. I'm so sorry to hear about this, Catherine, and especially saddened at the thought of losing Ms. Layla. She was certainly a sweet girl.
I had a very similar situation in June. Same thing - the insides of our furnace fried (the furnace controls the blower for the central air). Had it been during the winter when we had the furnace ON, we would have burned the house down. We have a 24/7 heating/cooling company that we use and they were able to fix everything the next day (we were just left without any A/C for the day). We opted just to have a whole new furnace installed because to fix/replace the wiring inside it was going to cost more than a whole new unit!.
In any event, it is so tough to go through something like that and to lose so many. Our hearts go out to you.
