Acrid smelling tank !

hi! ive had my viv set up for about a month and at first it had a lovely fresh "forest" smell to it, a handful of the earth still smells nice and earthy but there is this acrid sharp smell in the air of the tank....
ive got two pygmy's and ive been feeding them micro cricks. I just open the box and throw a few in once every other day, i cant imagine they eat them all so they must be hiding most of the time, are the crickets dying and causing the smell ??

also my top layer of forest floor is made up of sphagnum moss and dead laves....could that be rotting already ?????

for a clean up crew i have white dwarf woodlice normal greys and spring tails!
have i been over watering the plants ??? is it too damp ?? im at a bit of a loss...
might have to get in there at the weekend and strip the top layer off.
i might get some new moss and maybe opt for some orchid bark chippings ?
any suggestions very much welcome

heres a pic of my set up

yeah, 2 inches of hydro balls and 1 inch (ish) of charcoal.

i can see into the bottom of the tank it doesn't look that wet and definitely not mouldy !
