I woke up this AM to discover my furnance went out during the night and the temperature had began dropping. It was 59F when I woke up. Attempts to restart the furnance failed so I scheduled a service appointment for today and it should be repaired in the next few hours. I used to live in a two story home and that was a nightmare to heat. I am now in a one story small ranch that is incredibly energy efficient. Putting in additional insulation in the attic and having any leaks in the basement foam sealed, combined with moden windows and the fact that it's one story with probably 8' ceilings all mean the house can trap heat very easly.
I fired up two 1500W space heaters on in the kitchen and one in the living room (these rooms are connected) at 7:45 when it was 30F outside and 59F inside. The non brumating animals are in the living room. At 10:25 the living room was 66F and outside temperatures were 38F. There was no sun so the increase would have been due to the heaters, plant lights, etc.
It seems the two oil filled space heaters, much to my surprise, are cable of maintining temperature when it's 30-40F outside at least. I have a propane heater that I was going to use if these had been unable to maintain the temperature. This is a surprising advantage to a smaller home that has been tightly sealed and well insulated. All of the local stores are sold out of oil filled heaters nd they probably would have tripped the breaker if on the same circuit but a couple of years ago I had put most outlets on separate circuits just in case something like this happened.
