I've been wanting to get a panther chameleon for a few months now, and ug I'm just so frustrated that we can't afford one yet! My hubby keeps telling me to wait till after Christmas and winter... but I'm too impatient... Sigh, just wish stuff was cheaper.

I feel for you and understand. Times and the economy keep getting harder too. Unfortunately its not just the cost of the pet... but the supplies needed to keep the pets healthy and vet visits. Heck I never thought I would be breeding beetles (dubia roaches :)) To keep keep the cost down.

Yes, it is very frustrating not to be able to afford a cham. But it would be frustrating AND heartbreaking to get one and then not be able to afford to care for it properly. Your patience now will pay off in the end for both you and your future Cham!

I would be starting to purchase things now so it is not such a large bill at once. You are going to need certain things whenever you get your Chameleon. Watch Craig's list too for things you need.

BUT even if you get everything for your new baby don't buy him until you have a vet fund also in place. It would not be fair to them if they need a vet and you can not afford to take him. The vet fund is just as important as every other item needed for their well being :)

Best of luck in seeking out the items watch for sales too:D

Check the classifieds on here often. People sometimes practically give supplies away. Maybe also consider building your own cage. It's really not that hard and is cheaper than buying from a retailer.

I agree with buying all of the equipment needed before even looking for a cham.
Setting up your cage far ahead of time will avoid stress for the cham and for you. Putting together a cage while your cham is in a box is not fun for anyone involved.(Trust me, I know)
And for the vet fund, $100 is a good start. I took one of mine for x-rays (She broke her leg) and a checkup and it was under $100 at Cornell.

Also, think about getting a "pre-owned" animal, they are usually priced about the same as a baby. Just be sure to see the animal before committing to a purchase.

There are deals out there, just be ready ahead of time.
Good Luck! :D

I would put at least 200 in that fund- most vets are a little more expensive than that.

A fecal which eventually needs to be done, some members pay 25-35 for it. if parasites 50-75 for visit plus medication costs and a recheck to make sure the parasites are gone. Don't kid yourself chams can be very expensive if things start to go wrong. Better to be prepared than short. Replace the money ASAP if used :)

i know how you feel :/ ive been gathering supplies for a month now and doing research for about 6 months and am still waiting to get my cham :/ but the patience will be worth it when he comes and i can keep him happy and healthy <3

I have held back on getting another time and time again. My husband lost his job in july and was lucky enough to find another one but not as much money. I would like to have just two. I don't need a whole collection! I am happy with my one and only right now. He keeps me busy enough. I don't know how everyone does it will all the multiple chams!!!!.

DUH!!... He's gonna get one for Christmas... That was easy to figure out..

Lol that would be awesome if I got one for Christmas! But I am going to start getting supplies now, here and there. And I was thinking about breeding Dubia, should i start that project a month or so before I get my cham? Will chams that are cricket feed get used to roaches? I hope so...

Lol if he gets her a cham without supplies, that would be just as bogus as getting this girl hyped up for a christmas gift that's just speculation.

I waited approx 5 years before getting one. Don't regret it at all. I was in school at the time and then I finally got a house. Chameleon followed that. :) For now sate your appetite with pretty pictures and surf the forums a lot.
