Things that are not helpful on the forums...

I really want a cheeseburger with bacon on it. And some thin cut fries. Maybe a chocolate milkshake....

Between this and the pizza thread, I am now ravenous for burgers & pizza.

ME too...my friend just dropped off a McDonald's crispy chicken, fries and coffee...that should fix the cravings for a while.🍟🍔☕🤐

Now all I have to do is figure out how this relates to things that are not helpful on the forums! Guess we should be talking about chameleons and their husbandry maybe?

Well I think that food topic isn’t helpful especially to those of us who missed lunch today because we’re trying to get a job completed before the holiday 😡. but now that I have a break
And as much as I appreciate “the things that don’t belong here” , I would love to also see “the things that can help improve this form “. One of the things that I have noticed and have difficulty with is the search bar . it will take you to random post with the word you’re looking for which a lot of times aren’t relevant . I notice a lot of times people will say just use the search bar but in my experience with that I literally will have to search through dozens of threads before I find information that’s even remotely close to what I’m looking for . it would be nice if you searched and it was the topic of the thread
And not some random comment in a thread . of course being an old fart and into chameleons before we even had this Internet thing 🤪 maybe I’m doing it wrong . One of the things I will add to the things we don’t need here thread Is random people just throwing out information , there are plenty of professionals some of you of which I’ve grown very fond of . I think you know who you are because I like your comments all the time . Somehow I think they deserve a badge that way we know their information is more to the
Standard and not just somebody throwing crap out there (wow I actually added something to the conversation instead of being just a lurker how totally unlike me)

It's me isn't it? :hilarious:

I am sorry... I had thai food for lunch which was not exactly a bacon cheeseburger and fries. 😭

Could not agree more. I hardly ever suggest the search bar... It can bring back too many random posts as well. It can be good if your looking for something that was posted by a certain member though. Then you define by member. Otherwise it can be a plethora of info that is not clearly defined.

Oh my goodness no it’s not you , didn’t you read the part where are you know I like you because of the likes 😍 yeah the search bar frustrates the heck out of me because I know there’s information in here it just takes so long to find it

I know I was messing with ya. :hilarious: I am having one of those weeks lol

Yeah search bar is hard. Does not help that titles of threads are not specific when people enter them. Partly because most do not know what they should put other than "help".

I agree the search bar is most effective when you know who and what to search on it. It would be a huge help if people were better about creating relevant titles on their posts. Advanced search can help you narrow your search parameters especially by date so you don't have to look through as much out of date advice.

I agree that having a badge for us old timers is an excellent idea.

I use the search once in a while but never send other people there.

I feel everyone's experiences are valid from the 20 year vets to the ones who got their first cham 3 months ago. This is supposed to be a site for all chameleon lovers to come and share, learn, and teach, or that's my impression. If only the professionals are to put out information, how are we measuring who are the professionals? Staff members, people who have been keeping for 20 years, veterinarians, or those who have over 3 chams? If someone gives incorrect info then they should be informed what is right and it becomes a teachable moment that is recorded for many members to read. The way I see it, if it is not a discussion board then only people with say the Heart Award should be able to reply to health threads, etc. Newer members should not be alienated or treated as if they're some random. Especially for the growth of the site in the future. If older members are not willing to take the younger ones under their wing then how will the great advice be passed down 50 years from now? We have badges for media wins, let's have badges for members that have been around awhile.

I'm a Cham newbie. I have learned a ton from this forum. The advice I received has helped ease my fears, regarding caring for Carmelo. As a newbie (Cham owner - less than 2 months), I have offered non-technical information, such as, adding lexan to sides of enclosure. I would hope that newbies would not offer technical advice. I'm still trying to remember which bulb is uvb/uva. I love the husbandry review and that you guys ask for pictures of the enclosure. From pics, someone spotted that I was dusting with Calcium D3 and also giving Reptivite D3. That kind of attention to detail is invaluable. Because I found this forum, Carmelo Chameleon is living his best life.

I’m not saying that people can’t reply that’s not what I’m saying at all what I’m saying is the people that are knowledgeable should have a way of being recognized . going back through some of the comments i’ve seen in the past there’s been some very poor information and even A bit of snottiness about it . And yes the person with 20 years experience or the person who’s been on the forum since it’s inception . I’m not talking about limiting anybody

@Morpheo's Mom said..."The way I see it, if it is not a discussion board then only people with say the Heart Award should be able to reply to health threads, etc."...I certainly hope it never comes to that.
That makes two of us , I hope that’s not what people are thinking by my statement because that’s not what I meant at all . Crap now I’m just gonna go back to being a lurker . 😣

I have limited experience and knowledge - have only been at this with chameleons/reptiles for the past 3 1/2 years. However, I like to think that I’ve learned from some of the very best and experienced keepers enough that I can offer some help to others. I also learn from new keepers and their experiences. Adding in life and professional experiences and knowledge also has contributed to my ability to offer some help. I always hope that newbs will stick around and learn more and join the party of welcoming new keepers, offering feedback, sharing their chams and unique journey into the hobby, pose questions we can all think about and just become one of our ‘family’.

Lol I’ve said the same before in the past. I don’t know what the answer for it would be though. The problem is, there are new members who have loads of experience in something. It’d be a shame to limit their value. There are also people with loads of experience/time in the hobby, but are stuck in their old ways, or not up to date from some time off. I’ve kept reptiles since the 90s, but most of the time I didn’t know what I was doing, so that experience barely counts. I’ve been here a long time, but I’m going on a year now with no Cham, and with how things change in this hobby there are probably newer keepers that know more than me now. I’m pretty decent with plants, bioactivity, some bugs, etc but when it comes to complex animals that we’re still learning about(chams), a long timeframe of experience doesn’t mean much other than with the very basics of reptile keeping IMO. It’s like having a career where you need to continue your education each year.

I get what you are saying, being able to identify people who have ben here 5, 10, 20+ years would be helpful in many ways. People would certainly take their advice. I feel I've seen this topic thrown out there before....

I'm a Cham newbie. I have learned a ton from this forum.
I am glad your chameleon is living his best life!

@kinyonga I don't see how that would work anyway, no future members would be able to receive the heart award.

I have seen this topic thrown out a few times... Here is where I disagree. Just because someone has been a forum member for 5 years does not mean they are active in the forum or within the hobby. We are also seeing more people pop into the forum that actually have a ton of experience but are at a new member status because they are hardly here. Then there are the people that have been in the hobby but are not up to date on current standards of care.

Then lets break it down a bit more. There are two of us currently doing husbandry reviews. I am one of them and I only have 4 years of experience in the hobby. This was my first ever experience with a reptile. However I continue to learn and grow. I am extremely active here and I can look at an image and spot things that are not right. My lack of time in the hobby does make it so that I do not have the depth of knowledge others have. However when it comes to a husbandry review, spotting issues, and guiding new keepers I am in my pocket of knowledge.

@MissSkittles I hate to see you reduce your skill set like this. I have watched you grow right along with me here. We are the ones picking apart husbandry reviews and guiding new members. I hope you see your value to the forum. I know I could not handle all the husbandry reviews on my own.
I have limited experience and knowledge - have only been at this with chameleons/reptiles for the past 3 1/2 years

I have gone with the approach that when I see incorrect feedback I nicely correct the member. I feel that there is nothing wrong with this as long as it is done with kindness. This is a place for all to post and all to learn and grow. An inviting forum for anyone to share and receive help. This is what makes the forum great.

Yesterday I came across a thread where a newer member greeted the OP welcoming them then posted the husbandry review form which was very much needed. When I got there the form was filled out by the OP and I was able to go through everything. Just because someone is new does not mean they can not be an amazing addition. They made this new member seeking help feel welcomed and open to feedback. That makes a difference.

In closing to my book that I have written... lol I think we all add value and I think every word shared is valuable. I do not think that distinguishing one from another is worth it in the end. It diminishes others like they do not have value and I believe every single one of us bring something wonderful to this forum.
