so i plan on going to hawaii in april. Is it possible to bring a jackson chameleon home from hawaii? paperwork involved? dont people get in trouble for bringing them to hawaii?

well i think you will definitely have to fill out a cites permit etc.

It is a pretty complicated ordeal. I would just stick one in your pants ;)
jk jk,(was a joke because a guy got caught smuggling all sorts of reptiles over in his pants)

I dont know the exact process, but you definitely would need some cites papers. A good thing to do would be to google cites permits and see what kind you need to export from hawaii and see what they want you to do.

I may be wrong, but last I knew they were protected from capturing/keeping and export from the island.

I did it, you need to go to the court house and fill out some paperwork, its all free. I think you can bring back up to 15. I brought back 3. It's no trouble getting them out of Hawaii but you will need to check with the airline. Funny story but I actually got kicked off the airplane as they were pulling the gate away a flight attendant asked me oh whats in your box, and I replied they are chameleons. She went and told the pilot and he parked the plane and the flight attendant escorted me off the plane. It ends up they have to be checked. But besides that it wasn't that difficult. They sell them in the stores for $15 each but there is a guy on the Island that EVERYONE knows and he has a huge Jackson chameleon sign in front of his house and has an awesome setup. Try to go to him.

thanks

thanks for info still trying to decide between jackson and panther...was it a long wait to go through the courthouse?

No waits, you just go to this one builing their wildlife building show them your ID and they hand you a couple papers and then sign it. took me 10 min total.

Jacksons but no Bananas...

Ha Ha! I could not take home some mini bananas I bought in Hawaii when I went there.....had to leave them there. Paperwork was not an option for the bananas :)

Thats cool. I learn something new everyday. :p

Now Hawaii will be inundated with vacationers who are leaving with little Jackson's colonies.

The question, how many people will now make Hawaii their next vacation spot to come back with a colony of chams.....

Me! Me and my lady already discussed that this would be our honeymoon and
we would go adventuring to find chameleons a couple days, but now that i might be able to take some home i want to do it more. The thing is can i really take one out of that environment or what. I dont no. I still would love to go see them in the wild.

I plan on getting married in Hawaii if I ever do get married. :) I probably would do this if it weren't for parasites and such. :(

well every wild caught probably has parasites, but its pretty easy to get rid of them if its not horrible :)

*gasp* Well, still, the cost of a vet visit, fecal, and medicine is just like buying a jacksons from a reputable breeder. Bah!

wild caught issues yes

but i wouldnt count on them be as severe as wc imports from maddy.

think about it, you are hand selecting the animals ( not some collector )

you are exporting and importing and taking good care of them

they arent being collected, held for days in bad conditions and them exported across a great great distance, then held then sold, then sold then sold.

basically imho parasites yes, but not as much stress. which can make all the diff in a chameleon.

they are C.j. xantholophus

Hubby was stationed at Schofield for 6 years and loved it. Wish he woulda brought me a cham back.:( Im surprised as Jacksons are his fave.

Last time my siter & I went to hawaii, we sent a couple of them home overnight - then were told that was illegal. By that ime they were in Missouri. Sometimes I do really dumb stuff & I have a legal backgroung. Go figure, and I am a redhead not a blonde before one of you guys have to ask.:D

carry on

The TSA people do not mind hand checking your chameleons, the problem lies with the airline. Put your chams into a carry on bag & DON'T LET ANYONE know what your carrying.
