Superhero complex: Rescues

Gradually coming to terms with my loss this week. I've been thinking about rescues in general, and looking at my own behaviour and careful combing of Petfinder and Craigslist for things I could rescue. I'm fairly sure that I could easily cross the line into becoming an animal hoarder, there are always more animals needing rescue, and chameleons need experienced keepers!

Anyway, unless there are particular circumstances, I'm not going to rescue another chameleon. I've lost three now, all WC, and in their case I know that even if I managed to sort out their physical illnesses, they wouldn't be able to adapt to a life in captivity and I just prolonged their suffering. I know that not all WC chameleons have the same struggle, some really thrive with the right care, but I can't bear to go through it again, and will not even indirectly support the trade in WC chameleons.

But I still have the urge to rescue, so I've signed up to volunteer at a local wild animal rehabilitation centre. I'm booked on a course on Sunday to teach me how to properly nurse baby birds, as they are struggling with well-meaning people bringing in lots of babies this season! Should be fun, I've never done anything like this before, and I'm really looking forward to it!

This is what I found on my doorstep as I was bringing an empty box home from the vet yesterday, from the nest above our window, where he fell and was returned a couple of weeks ago, I took it as his seal of approval!

Pat yourself on the back

How so very nice of you. It is great to see people do NICE things :D.
Kudos to you, don't loose your passion and try not to get too frustrated. If it were not for you those animals last days would have at best probably been spent in a freezer:mad:.

Keep it up

Chris

I see a lot of BS with people and their animals. It makes me so mad, and absolutely sick.

Good for you! :D

Just got back from the course and it was wonderful! I learned how to find out what food a bird eats by looking at the shape of the beak, and how to feed baby birds. And I also discovered they are desperate for people to foster birds at home, and they were really keen for me to do it because I was one of the few people without a cat! Here are too many pictures, I got a bit carried away...

What a sweet little chick! I volunteer at our local bird sanctuary. Its very rewarding work to see fledglings thrive. We currently have a lot of young owls, kestrels and baby hummingbirds.

I love wildlife rescue and rehab! Prepare to be hooked for life! I've been doing it for over 10 years now. It is so much fun and rewarding. :)

Thats awesome! You look like the right person for this job! Good luck with the new adventure..Sounds fun!

Wow that is quite a variety of birds there! Great that you are doing that! My neighbor down the street just took in a nest of Quakers(the small green parrots). They are wild down here now from all the escapees and ones that stupid people turn loose and there are flocks of them everywhere. The nest fell out of the tree and had four babies in it. I hope they survive. I had about 10 of them on my bird feeders today. They are a sight to see!!
