Solar Meter 6.2

Yes, the higher the better in my opinion, well... let's not get crazy but if uv gets up to 300 in full real sun than high 30's is what you should shoot for.
And I think the arcadias are definitely something to consider

Thank You so much......My Solar meter just came today but I didnt get out to check my mail till Ernie had already gone to dream land. I will check his bulb first thing in the morning, its only a few weeks old. I will adjust his branch up some if need be:) My new cage ( Not built yet)with the Slider Hood has a 24" Reptisun 5.0 for it already, when that wears out I will give the Arcadia a whirl ;)

You will love having a meter.
Its such a great tool, I meter everything inside and out. In all weather, temps, shade, fog!!
Amazing the different readings you will get.
When I get my arcadias I will post the output
Enjoy and Happy New Year

OK..... Happy New Year!!
I checked Ernies UVB basking spot this morning after he drank & ate. Turns out his branch needed to be raised about 2"s ! I only got a reading of 16-17:eek: Now its in the Mid 30's... I could raise it a bit more;) I am useing a Zoo Med compact flouresent mounted horizontally. Like I said this bulb is only a few weeks old. I did some messing around with a 6 month old C.F. last nite. I put it in a dome fixture and took some readings..... This bulb has plenty of Life in it yet!:) 1 big discovery though.... mounting this bulb horizontally puts out WAY more UVB! I just made another reading,, holding the meter almost touching the screen.... Got 60! I wish I had'nt thrown out all those other bulbs after 6 months.... Ive been tossing money in the trash. Everyone should have 1 of these meters!!!!:D

Why aren't you using a linear bulb? They are the most recommended bulb to use. I have been using my Solar Meter 6.2 now for about 5 years because it is the most highly recommended one for chameleons. If you want to buy one do your research and you will see that is the one to buy, not any of the others.

I measure from my basking branch which I set at 8". When my measurements get to 20 I order/replace my bulb for my adults in the larger cages. My adults get some outside time in the good weather so I feel really comfortable they get plenty of good UVB. My ladies are in the smaller cages so I monitor their lights pretty well. They all like to hang out around the top anyway, so 20 will work until it falls below that. I save my bulbs that fall below that for my baby bins. No bulb gets tossed until they are under 8-10. My baby bins get their light pretty close to where the babies bask so they get their uvb at about 5" so I measure from that point.

If you keep more then one animal and if you breed animals I highly recommend that you purchase a solar meter. You will make up the expense over time on bulbs and keep your animals healthy.

Boca.....
I did buy the Solar Meter 6.2;) The reason I am using the C.F. is because when i got my hood it was a Zilla..... I didnt like the little flour. tube light it came with & the Zoo Med would not fit. I also didnt like the Halogen sockets much either, although I did keep 1 socket for a 25 watt basking halogen. I replaced the 2 other sockets with ceramic 1's from the hrdwr. store. and could use the C.F. mounted horizontally;) the other socket now has a Day Blue 100 watt bulb for over all heat for the upper part of the cage. This hood was expensive & I couldnt see buying a different 1 so...... I modified it. Works great now!! You can see pics of his home & hood in "Meet Ernie" thread. Im getting good results with the C.F.

So all these readings are for a panther, But what about a jackson? I just received my solarmeter 6.2, and have been playing with it a little bit. I am only getting 16-19 at 8 inches through the screen, and the bulb is only 2 months old?
