ok, i got some silkworm eggs in a petrie dish.... now what do i do with them???
thaanks ,,, lisa

Put them somewhere where they will be about 82 degrees, and they will hatch. Then the work begins with constant feeding. If you have allergies, have meds handy because the chow will really get to you:eek::eek:

thanks,,, but what if i dont want to hatch them all out at the same time, i think ive read something about refrigeration????

That is where the problem lies. If you ordered them online the they are taken out of diapause (in my case the fridge!!) to send them to you. I didn't realise this befroreand put mine in the fridge to incubate at a later date. They neve hatched. You will probably be best off just letting them hatch all at once.

I concur! Just let them all hatch, grow some to full size and let them cocoon. Once they emerge as moths, you can let them breed and lay eggs, then you can put those in your fridge and hatch them out as needed.

I have a cricket tub with the base cut out and replaced with fine mesh which I sit on the lid which has damp kitchen paper towel on raised by milk bottle lids so they get humidity but don't get wet. Might have a pic somewhere. I just make sure the paper towel is kept damp.

Is this to hatch the eggs? I'd lov to see a pic if you have one!!!

It is kinda hard to explain, but hoepfully these pics will help!

The base (which is a lid)

The top part that I put the eggs into - I lay a piece of tissue on the mesh so they don't fall through!

The whole thing, which I then put anotehr lid on top of to keep humidity in.

Thanks for he pics Tiff! That definitely helps me see what I need!

But now I'm starting to think that Igot the before the horse, what am I going to feed them... Indidntborder any food because I thought I could refrigerate them and not hatch them just yet...
Guess I'll have to go look for a mulberry tree!!!!!

When I ordered mine they took about a week to 10 days, so there's no immediate rush! Have fun tending to their every need! :D

Not so much to start with, but if they all hatch you will need access to a lot of leaves or buy the chow. I always buy it in powder form as it works out cheaper.

The powdered chow is great! You can just mix up as little as you need at a time by adding boiling water to cook it. The ready made chow only lasts a month in the fridge and if you start them on leaves then run out of leaves, they won't eat chow! They can go from chow to leaves but not the other way :)
