Panic in the streets

Wife is a nurse and these idiots with possible virus keep showing up. Stay at home... She's all worried that we're going to have no supplies for the kids. And I couldn't agree more, the people acting crazy are the main problem. All of these media outlets should be held accountable for inciting hysteria. This country/world has just gone ...full retard
 
GoodKarma summed up my thoughts on this perfectly. Don't freak out but you should be cautious. We can debate all day long about the mortality rate but it is clearly 1. highly infectious and 2. dangerous to senior citizens and those who have other medical conditions that compromise your immune system.

Well, the same could be said for almost every other illness regarding that demographic. I'm not much of a conspiracy guy, but something is up with this bull.

What @Lennoncham said. Like many illnesses, it's not a major threat to the general populace but is very dangerous to the compromised and those with existing respiratory problems.

Honestly not sure what's up with the crazy media frenzy and shutdowns, unless they know something medical professionals aren't privy to. None of the folks I've talked to in the industry are particularly bothered about this outbreak. The way people are reacting is much scarier than the virus itself as far as I'm concerned.

I'm not worried, but I am cautious. Be smart, be safe, and be mindful of others. Greed and selfishness is a very serious problem in times like these.

Believe me when I say, personally I am not that worried about this at all. I live in Korea where literally 99.9999999% of the population is wearing masks everywhere they go. I do not (partially because I drive a car to work). But, I think the response is natural, and amplified x 1000 because of the internet and social media. People are afraid of the unknown and when words like epidemic and pandemic are thrown around, imagination + fear of the unknown can take over.

Alot of the people who have been infected with the virus in Korea have said the social stigma is far worse than the physical suffering/symptoms. This is 70% of the reason I am cautious. The other 30% is concern that I may infect someone who would be in real danger of dying if they caught it, like the older couple living across from us.

On a related note, while I, again, am not that concerned about catching the virus myself (I "joked" to my wife that I'd rather catch the virus and get it over it), I am somewhat grateful for the "overreaction" in the US. Several years ago my mother was diagnosed with blood cancer (similar to leukemia) and had a bone marrow transplant. While the transplant and subsequent treatments were successful, her immune system is roughly half as strong as a healthy 70 year old. Catching the coronavirus would probably be a death sentence for her. So, even if this is not a real danger to the general populace, the more it is contained, the less the chance of someone like my mother catching it.

Also, must be your canadians keeping it cool, because there are most definitely medical professionals freaking out here. I hear about it everyday from the wife.

You're not confused - I did work with animals. Been going to school as a medical device reprocessing technician, and am currently at the tail end of my practicum.

Yeah, the US is definitely freaking out harder than we are here in Canada. We're cautious, but not panicking.
 
It's amazing how minor(relatively speaking) of a thing can get everyone in a country to happily give up their rights. No gatherings now? I get it, people have died, and they play on that anytime someone comes along saying this. Unfortunately, that is reality... People die from all sorts of things, and especially those who are compromised and elderly. I have some close family members who are definitely at risk, and one of them would almost surely die if infected. Precautions should absolutely be in place for these people(nursing homes, etc). But closing schools? Restaurants? Stores? Sporting events? None of this makes sense to me no matter how hard I try to rationalize it.

Maybe one good thing about all of this is that it prepares us for something much more deadly.

The media needs to chill. All the scientific articles and such are showing this is a mild pneumonia like illness. The folks dying, would have died from influenza if they would have gotten that. It's being overblown.

Comparatively Ebola is much worse, and yet no one freaked out like this.

Ebola has a Higher mortality rate yes. But it was contained to 3 countries (for the most part) Not the entire world.

I wouldn't really call it contained. The US had 11 cases in 2014, and likely more since.

It's not as widespread sure.

The reality is however that the new data and doctors that are not pushing fear mongering are showing that COVID19 is no more deadly than influenza. We do not have anywhere near proper testing or confirmation of cases to give an accurate fatality rate for this. The one we are being given, the 2% is very likely grossly inflated.

There again, I say this freak out didn't happen for the 2009 H1N1. Which 80% of deaths were healthy adults, that were under 65. COVID19 is only fatal to immune compromised and Elderly. Any illness would likely kill those same folks. That is not a good example of a serious illness, that should cause mass panic like this.


I mean think about this.

COVID19: Under 65, Healthy no risk.
H1N1: Everyone is at risk.

Similar contaigousness, yet we didn't freak out for the H1N1 but did for this.

Like James said I hate sounding like a conspiracy theorist, however this is really seeming like a Mass Distraction, from something else.
 
My childeren even say a 2 week long virus is blown out of control....people are retarded!! Going insane got no brain....lol...
