Olive goes spaz over hornworms - she will almost fall of the vine for them- but today , she missed the worm, got my finger stuck to her tongue, I did not want to hurt her mouth, so I thought if I put my finger closer ( it was not that far away, but it made me jump - lol ) , she would let go- NO ! instead, she lunges even further, and starts CHOMPING my finger - the whole time the worm is right next to her face on my OTHER finger - once I was sure he tongue was not stuck anymore I got my ravaged finger out of her mouth  it was really fast, and mostly my finger is just pinched-a bit purple reddish on the end- with one tiny tooth hole on the very top - I had to laugh tho- I think she is going blind ! or thought she had the mother load of a worm - then she looks at me like this is MY fault - she is a BRAT ! :p I know it does not look that bad- but it did hurt - lol I know its not as bad as some bites I have seen on here  so now I belong to the "flash club" ( thank you Max  ) AND the " bite club" :p

Yeah they can bite and it does hurt if they do by accident.
They do have sharp teeth, but they are gentle and don't mean to hurt us.
As all my chams love to be held. I never fear them nor they I.
Realize how nice it is that we have cultured a friendship with this wild reptile.
Kind of amazing if you think about it.

you don't know Olive very well - she is a terror !! :p ( just kidding ) I know she did not do it to be mean, she is a good girl  yes, its really cool when you KNOW they now trust you - unlike my little Neo - he will pretty much get on my hand, then once OUT- throw his hissy fit - lol today was a grand one- he about flipped backwards off my hand ~ now his bite- it would draw blood I have no doubt if he got a good one in on ya - he bit the inside of my upper arm once- it left a bruise- but I had on a sweatshirt thank goodness or I bet he would have taken a chunk out  he is still just a baby - lol this was today's fit - lol

Hi leaf,

Yee i don't know Olive, but I have my own sociopath.
He is the only chameleon that has ever bitten me and yes it hurt and drew blood.
I have resigned myself to handle him with care as if he gets frightened he may bite. That is his nature. However the rest of my chams are as gentle as I said. I never worry. Don't even think of it.
My crazy guy came to me that way and that's OK. I knew it when I got him. He is still awesome with colors and he does let me hold him as long as the mood is right.
I handle him with my garden gloves if I have to move him where I think he might be scared. ( see thread - helping an aggressive cham) https://www.chameleonforums.com/helping-aggressive-cham-127384/
I have tried all the hand feeding etc with him the gloves are the only thing that clams him down.Still can't say why. But it does work.
Your baby will get big and now is the time to find a way to get along. I know I have a way with Ki hope this is a help to you.

I definitely own some crazy chams that can bite from time to time. I found it best to introduce yourself to them with food such as a super worm or waxworm. And then use a stick for them to crawl onto.

Olive is really tame, she just got excited, and got the wrong thing- she used to be really scared of me- it took about a year for to let me pick her up - but now, she is fine w/ it , I just put my hand in, and up she goes - she does the same thing w/ snails- she is so eager to eat them, she just shoots like a wild woman :p hardly taking aim not of my other 9 Jax get that worked up about food - just Olive - but the panther- yeah- he is just scared I think- he is also young , but I cant figure why he pretty much will get on my hand, not get to upset, its once he is out, then he goes crazy ?

Here's what Stanley did to me one day when he was going for a sliver of strawberry...

It was totally my fault, Stanley is completely harmless. It scared me more than it hurt!

I take it Stanley is a Veiled? Veiled's seem to have the nastiest/strongest bites.

Nope!!!! My female Parsonii (Thelma ) loves snails more then life itself!!!! :D
If she even thinks I have a snail for her she will run over ANYTHING to get to it.
I THOUGHT it would be OK for me to feed her from my finger!!!!NOT!!!! Recently she ran up,shot her tongue out and the snail was so strongly attached to my finger she could not pull it in. That did not sway her determination for even a SECOND!!! She immediately just followed her tongue to the snail. When she grabbed the snail with her mouth she also got my finger with it. Not wanting to hert her I was firmly determined to hold my ground and not pull my finger from her mouth. NOT!!! I was WRONG!!!! She thought she had the biggest fattest, toughest snail she had ever had the pleasure to bite on in her life!!! AND SHE WAS NOT LETTING GO:mad:  Well enough said and I'm feeling pretty silly but that was a significant Cham bite. Lol

Not laughing at your pain, but I love Olive stories :)

My Jax Ferdinand does the same for snails. He literally fell off a branch trying to rush over to eat one and his horns got caught in the pothos vine. One time, he picked one up with his foot like a little monkey and then couldn't figure out how to get it in his mouth. I'm happy to have finally found a food he gets excited about.
