Hi everyone! My name is Jessi. I'm relatively new here and so far I've been lurking but I figured it's time to make a post. My first chameleon was a senegal and I got her 15 yrs ago when I was 15 yrs old. Her name was Mariko, named after the Marvel character. She lived for about 3 years. I kept her in a 20 gallon high aquarium the whole time since that's what they like to sell you when you buy chameleons! She was relatively healthly except for a bacterial infection that she developed in her mouth (which may have been from living in the aquarium). Took her to the vet, cleared it up, and then it came back and sadly she died right before I went away to college. I sort of feel like she was old and sick and passed on because she knew I was leaving. My second chameleon was a tiny baby veiled named Serena that hardly ever ate anything and died pretty young probably due to metabolic bone disease. Since then, I've had several leopard geckos, crested geckos, and a couple other random lizards like an ameva and chinese tree dragon.

So a few months ago, I came across a senegal chameleon in the local petstore. She looked very skinny and had a bad toe and I was really hesitant to buy her but she reminded me so much of Mariko. So I kept going in to see how she was doing and after about a month, I decided to buy her. They gave me a discount because I told them I was hesitant since she seemed a little sickly. I named her Kami. I've had her since June and is doing great. She eats a lot and has gained weight. Her toe never healed and it doesn't seem like she uses it, but it doesn't stop her from getting around and her grip is pretty strong. Here's a recent picture of Kami:

About a month ago, the petstore where I purchased Kami had 2 baby veiled hatchlings for sale. They were so adorable so I bought one. I haven't named her yet, so far I've been referring to her as "the baby." Here she is the day I brought her home (yes I know that's a glass aquarium, I plan to build her a screened cage in the next couple of weeks):

I'll make seperate posts for them to ask about my setups and lights and everything, but for now I just wanted to introduce me and my babies :)

Hi and welcome to Chameleon Forums! Kami is such a cutie-pie, and, as for 'Baby', well she is just way too cute! They just look so adorable at that age - it's a shame that they 'grow into their eyes' so quickly! :D You will enjoy watching her grow up!:D

Welcome to the forums, You came to the right place. Your chams are amazing and im glad you came to us and joined the hobby. You will never get out its like a sinkhole or blackhole you cant come out of the obsession:) We love your chams

Welcome to the forum!
You did very well to have kept your first Senegal alive for so long!
I hope this one will do well for you too!

Regarding the mouth infection...generally unless the area is thoroughly cleaned out (by a vet) and the chameleon put on antibiotics it will return....just for future reference.

Can you post a picture of the toe that is not good please? Also, is there a bump on the very end of her nose?

Veileds are not any harder than Senegals to keep....so as long as your husbandry is good hopefully you will have it for a long time too. With proper care and a bit of luck female veileds can live for over 6 years.

Veiled females can produce eggs once they are sexually mature even without being with a male, so its important to provide a suitable place for it to dig in its cage so you won't miss the subtle signs that it needs to lay.

Thanks :) If I remember correctly, the vet gave my first cham antibiotics and the infection went away but then came back maybe a year later? It was so long ago, so it's kinda hard to remember exactly.

I'll post pics of Kami's toe when I made a separate post for her with all of her info and stuff. I don't think she has a bump on her nose, her nose has always looked that that. Don't worry, I'll post lots of pics :D I just wanted to make separate posts since I have 2 chams and didn't want to make it all confusing with my different questions about them hehe.

I've been scouring these forums and the rest of the internet for as much info as I can find, but thanks for all the links, there are a few in there I haven't seen yet

That's what happens if the area of the mouth isn't cleaned out enough (and antibiotics given...as yours was)...and quite often it will come back anyhow. The most often bacteria involved in my experience is pseudomonas aeruginosa.
