Hello all. I've made a few posts on the forums recently with all kinds of questions and concerns about this fascinating new hobby, and well, more keep popping up so here I am again.
With the colder months upon us in New England I've decided to change up my six month old male veiled's basking bulb. I had been using a standard 25 watt basking bulb from a pet store that produced temps around 84F, but I was never fully satisfied with the bulb because it didn't seem to produce a ton of light; it didn't fill the cage and penetrate down through the foliage very well. Also my cham, since about early October, hasn' ventured out of his basking area too often and pretty much remains brown.
So today I put in a 38 watt halogen flood light and took out the old bulb. This bulb gives off a ton more light, almost to the point where I think it might be too bright (it's 490 lumens). My little guy seems to love it; he's been basking for much of the day still, but perhaps seems a little more active, and is actually green. However, he's started to gape which worries me. Is this normal as he adjusts to the new bulb or is it likely too warm? The basking temp now is about 87F. And also he seems to droop his body over his main basking branch (imagine like a wet teabag on a branch, but not that severe). I haven't seen him do that before. Is that normal?
One final question: what is better for chams: soft white light or yellow "warm" light, or does it not make a difference?
Thank you.
