OP, Gingero is absolutely right. It will take time for him to settle in and feel comfy. You definitely need to add more branches going in every direction. Try to recreate the motif of a tree in nature for best results.
Also, what did you mean by only taking him outside when the lights are out? Are you implying that you will only be taking him outdoors after his lights turn off at the end of the night? Do you have him on a strict 12 hours lights on and 12 hours lights off schedule. Maybe you already know this, but NEVER try to handle you chameleon after lights out while he is sleeping or getting ready to sleep.
Lastly, please continue to ask for help, advice and guidance if you’re unsure about anything. Especially if this is your first chameleon! You will come learn that the experienced and dedicated owners here don’t just view chameleon husbandry as a hobby, but as a commitment.
