Noticed 2 days ago that Melon had lost 2 nails on one of her front hands. I don't think it looks any different but put Neosporin on just in case today. Should I be concerned? Is this normal?
Nail loss can happen after a chameleon gets to heavy to support his/her weight climbing on the screen. You should use branches or vines around the sides of the cage at different levels so they have access to every area without having to use the screen to climb.
Neosporin is the first aid I would try but keep a close eye to make sure they don't get infected. Any sign of swelling or inflammation may need veterinary treatment.
I have lots of vines and branches but the last maybe week she has been perching herself on the screen in between vines. She's also been sleeping on the screen in the top corners. She's never done it before so I assumed she just wanted to change spots? And I will definitely watch out for anything thank you for replying
Neosporin is a combination of 3 topical anti-biotics. Bacitracin, Polymyxin and Neomycin. I would not use it in eyes, ears (not relevant in chams) or on the mouth unless advised by a vet.
Silvadene or silver sulfadine ointment is used more commonly in reptiles but few people have it on hand unless they got it from their vet.
As far as I know neo or polysporin are both fine for wounds but like jacksjill said I would not want it in the eyes or mouth unless directed to do it by a vet. However...my vets always recommended the flamazine because it shouldn't hurt the eyes or mouth if it accidentally got into either but you do need a prescription for it I think.
