Broken Nail on my Jackson’s?

Hey there, everybody! I was just posting to the form to try to get some opinions about this. A day or two ago I noticed this on my chameleon‘s hand and noticed that his nail was pulled back. There is a slight cut under his toe, but he still moves the toe and has control over it. he also doesn’t seem too bothered by it.

I was more or less wondering, is that something I should go in and try to see a doctor for a broken toe? Or if I should just keep an eye on it help in the cage make sure that he’s not trying to do too much giving an ample healing time?

I rarely handle him maybe once a week at most at most. I touched it today, and more than not wanting to be touched as a whole he didn’t seem bothered with his finger. He’s still active. Eating normal. Maybe some slight inflammation but nothing concerning to me atleast.

It’s also confusing because he is in a glass cage with mostly plastic or real plants while I build him way bigger cage, so I’m really not even sure where he would’ve even snagged it and I rebuild his cage every few months to make sure that there’s no mold growing in the back.

Any further tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just wanna make sure he is all right!

Toes and feet are a sensitive area and not a place you want cuts to happen. This can easily get infected as they are walking around throughout the cage.

Can you post more pics please? I would generally recommend a vet visit with a reptile vet to ensure there is no infection especially with an open wound and inflammation.

thank you so much for your response! It looks like the cut has scabbed over and the inflammation has gone down on a good little bit for anything it was. He still uses that hand and finger, just seems like it’s pulled slightly back. I also grabbed coconut oil incase it gets infected because I heard that would be good.

I was going to take him and wash his paw to see if the nail was fully disconnected, but I figured that if over a week or so time and it is still attached then that is most likely not the case and that will just breed infection. He’s also 95% happy throughout the day besides when the AC shuts off and he gets a little warm, lol.

So no coconut oil... You can use manuka honey on it though. This has healing properties. Only that specific kind though not just any honey.
IT could have been that he managed to cut it on the plastic plants. Live plants will be better overall and dont pose the same risk for chams.

For now just keep an eye on it. It does not look swollen and appears to be healing. Watch the nail. It may fall off depending on how much damage it had.

Thank you for the correction! I knew that the fake plants could have been an issue. Will go and buy that honey today. I’m currently working on building him a way bigger cage that’s gonna use actual plants and a lot more wood than fake plants because he’s currently in a glass cage being in Colorado.

I keep checking on him every 2 to 4 hours during days off and then we’ll have a camera set up for when I’m at work just to keep an eye on him. Thank you so much!
