I am curious to see the diversity in what people use for a laying bin?

Sand? Potting soil? mixtures? share what you use and your experiences with it, good or bad?

about how much sand do you put in this bin and about what age should i put a bin in for my female veiled?

The bin should be 12 inches deep and around 5 or 6 months they could lay. How much do you feed and what is her basking temps?

When to put in a laying bin?

Liz is a female veiled and I think she is just about to turn one year old. We got her from a friend who was moving and needed to rehome her. As far as I know she has had no male visitors since her hatchling days. At what age should we put a laying bin in her enclosure? I have not seen any signs that she is ready to lay but have read horror stories about females that died eggbound because no laying bin was available.

This site is such a resource. This is my first post, but I have been reading posts since Christmas. Thank you all for your words o' wisdom.

Always have one available in her enclosure

I tried playsand in a large planter but my female ambilobe dropped 21 eggs on the floor of her cage after digging one hole and not covering it. I switched to a larger clear plastic bin and added potting soil, about 1 to 1 with play sand and she laid perfectly the 2nd clutch. 23 eggs that time. I got the tip for the clear bin from Eric Thompson (member). There are pics on this thread on the last page.

i feed on average 7 med crix a day since she is probably 4-6 months old and just getting her colors. basking temps are 90-85, cage temps durring the day are 74 ish, night drops to 68ish, humidity above the plants seems low 30%, but below the plants ranges from high 30% to 70% after i mist, usually 50% after the mister goes off every hour

Lower those temps now. I keep my female at 80 and only feed her 3 times a week. Lower temps and less food helps to prevent unwanted clutches. Read this: http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/2007/12/keeping-female-veiled.html

wonderful! thank you for the information!! i just swapped out her bulb and im going to leave her for a few days since she had a fairly big meal today.

i think she will be OK since she likes to sit out on the window witch is closer to 73* and she has been out there for 4-6 hours of the day and she sits in a cooler corner most of the time when she is in the cage.

im going to throw a bin in there just in case, i also think if there was a problem she could burrow in the potted plants i have in there as well

however the link mentions my temps, although the basking spot is a bit high, are within reason... http://raisingkittytheveiledchameleon.blogspot.com/2007/12/temperatures-and-thermoregulation.html
