LEDs produce light with extremely little heat and are very energy efficient compared to incandescent and halogen lamps (the two common types that produce light and heat). I think you might be thinking of mercury or sodium vapor lights.

Florescent lights use the ionized gas. Florescent lights are the ones that we use for UVB.
