If your new to the forums, and chams!!!

I think threads like this one help make others feel more comfortable. It can be intimidating to ask questions. If it weren't for this forum my babies would have a much less fulfilling life. I have learned so much about proper setup, lighting and feeders through this resource. I am so thankful for the forums existence.

I am happy to help answer questions as well.
Having kept 4 different species of cham over the years, and starting out back in the 70's (doing everything all wrong!!) I have learned quite a lot.

I have never bread chams, so I have no experience in that department :D

I have received several PM's, mostly from pics I have posted and ppl asking how I did something.
I reply to everyone, so please feel free :)

I believe it is no coincidence that this is the first thread I read today. This morning, my husband was telling me that he was going to quit his snake forum, bc of how hateful they were to beginners. Not just members but the mods too! He had me look at the one that just had him fuming and this poor guy started off by telling everyone on there how much they rocked and how great they were, and he was asking some pretty basic beginner questions. These people just ATTACKED him! I couldn't believe it! My husband had been getting annoyed by how a lot of the members acted on there, but this did him in. Now he's looking for another forum. He told me how lucky I was to have such a good forum to get advice from experienced keepers. I know how lucky I am. Everyone here has been so great and informative! I can't wait to get a bit of experience under my belt so I can help people out as well. :) What you all seem to 'get' that a lot of other forums don't, is that it is WAY more important to help out a beginner so that the chameleon lives a better life, then it is to make them feel bad about themselves......and another important thing is making sure they feel comfortable with asking MORE questions whenever a new one comes up. This is a great forum and I'm proud to belong to it! :D

Im glad youve never bread them, as breading then frying them might not taste so good.

This forum is the best!

Cricketkilla, it's funny that you posted this because yesterday I was wondering why there wasn't a "sticky" encouraging people to not be afraid to ask questions especially since many if not most of us have been given misinformation by sellers (NOT forum sponsors, to be clear).
I wanted a Jackson's for many years--long before reliable UV bulbs were made--but was told that you bought one only to watch it die. Sadly true at that time (didn't buy one then--heeded the warning).
Flash forward a couple of decades and I was told that they weren't doomed anymore with the right care.
The care sheet I was given by the seller would have worked for a while but I was truly blessed to have found this forum right away.
My recently passed Jackson's had a good, healthy life thanks to all the Chameleonforums members who generously shared knowledge with a then "newbie".
I even found a competent vet for my chams from forum members.
Dr Monaco has been capable, helpful and caring.
SarahcoadunatioZac, sometimes posts just get missed unintentionally. Just "bump" the thread with a request for replies.

Another option to get attention to your thread is to PM a link to a member you feel may be able to help, then that member can respond in the thread itself and keep the info on the open forum.
Rember there are no stupid questions
We have a great group here and most are always willing to help and offer a kind word or two :)

Please don't be afraid to ask question from senior members. If your worried about looking stupid PM me, or the senior member you would like to talk too. I promise that I will return promptly, and so will they. This place was made for learning and to receive guidance! Use this fabulous resource to your advantage. I've been there, to scared to post due to the fear of ill remarks that may be received. WE ARE HERE TO HELP, NOT PUT YOU DOWN!!!!!

Thank you
Excellent post, this is a great forum, and all of us want to keep it as friendly and helpful as it is. Anyone who wants to PM me should also please feel free to do so, no matter how small or big the question :) (for the ones I don't know I'll pass you onto my favourite vet :D)

But doesn’t answering questions via private message defeat the purpose of a public forum? By asking on the forums that gives the OP some varying information, techniques and opinions that won’t happen if they only ask one person behind the scenes. Perhaps too, all that differing advice may help somebody else down the road.
Sort of, yes. Posting in the public forum should be the first thing to do so the information is available for others to give advice or to learn from. If someone new is particularly worried (of looking stupid or being put down) then it would be better to PM than not ask at all though. Like Camimom said - sometimes threads don't get answered.
Sometimes a new person makes 5 threads with the same questions on, which is sort of the opposite of what we are discussing now. Balance is all important, threads like this help to keep this forum what it is :)

Along with what Trace said. You gotta remember that not all senior members are that "qualified" to be answering questions. The same goes for junior members the other way. They could just not be a participant to the forum their for their member status is not senior but really they could have years of experience.

Just wanting to get that out there. If new members are reading this then its important to let them know that there are members here who actually have experience on subjects and others that just spout out what they have read with no real experience. The member status should not judge who they listen to.

I think this is another good reason to post the question. If you get mis-information then someone else will be there to correct it.

I'm really enjoying this forum in the brief time I've been around. I typically pm a likely member a question because on many forums even after using the search function, you are flooded with both information and misinformation or when very new you don't know the best keywords to use to bring up the topic you want.

On here though I've been pleasantly surprised by the lack of flaming, fighting and condescending posts about using the search function.

I like the senior member designation. Most forums simply use post count, which is often deceiving when trying to figure out which information is most correct.

My hat is off to all of you! While the forum contains a lot of useful information, the people are what makes it a great resource and pleasant place to be. ---'--@

Great thread Trey so sweet of you to offer help. I haven't had as much time lately to post and when I do log in my PM box is running over and that takes most of my free time. New members with questions I do encourage to post so that the answers may also help others and they can get different opinions. If they have a tread already I alway post on their thread instead of answering the PM. However some do not want to post and shy about looking bad or being made fun of so those I try to help privately. Cain if I get questions on species or anything I'm not sure about I pass them on to members that I think can help them.

I hope others would do the same:) Of course if anyone wants to PM me because they fear ridicule then I am down to answer any questions I can help on.

It is a good thread. Hopefully it will show members that there are plenty of us (more than less) that can help in a constructive and respectful manner. Dont let the few percent discourage you from posting!! Most of the time those members are "6 month experts" who just started getting things right themselves;)

Alls i can say is this site is so great! The senior members n even just members r so helpfull i have learned so much from just reading other peoples posts n answers to alota questions! i do like to think i have become pretty resourceful with alot and it is mostly from talking with members on this forum! so many people have helped me and i just wanted to say THANK YOU and i look forward to trying to help out where i can and of corse to still learn cause every day is a "new Lesson" my fav saying!! and so true!:D :D :D

OK, a quick question then. Is there anyway to tell how old a graceful is? Or any cham for that matter. Is there a est weight or size for a adult?

Great post! I just helped out 2 junior members with questions they asked. So i volunteer my services aswell :p

Please don't hesitate to send me or anyone else a PM. I'm always here to help someone out!

It would only be a guess with any Cham. I'm not familiar with gracefuls but we have a few members that are. I would recommend that you start your own thread to ask that question and post some pictures.

Yup chameleon forums kicks ass...I've gotten a lot of help here and lots great knowledge about chameleons..love ya guys...:D
