How to use toltrazuril on Coccidia Case

Hi Guys,

My male Nosy Faly (WC) tested positive for coccidia. He hasn't shown any symptoms of being ill, he is eating and drinking well, and he gained 5g in the last 6 days (which is when I got him).

My Vet has Toltrazuril but doesn't have Ponazuril (and getting it seems to be complicated). I am wondering what your opinion is on using Toltrazuril and how can we determine the correct dosage so things doesn't get sour.

Also, if the animal doesn't show any signs of illness, could you consider coccidia as part of his normal intestinal fauna? or should we get rid of coccidia at all times?

Thanks

Thanks Dave,

When he says the vet gave him 9 "units" is this "ml"? what do you think?
I am not Dave, but I would have to say "No.."
9 ml is a LOT.. So, it doesn't make sense to me.

I am assuming he meant Intravenous Unit (pure speculation ALERT).. which I have no idea how to convert to ml.. sorry.
But, it should be based on your chameleon's weight and the strength of the solution (if it is an oral suspension)..
What did your vet say? Is he also clueless about the med dosage?

Howdy Edgar,

It appears that there are 100 units to a milliliter (ml). So 9 units is 0.09ml which is a small but reasonably sized volume to have to measure. Don't kock yourself out trying to get exactly 0.09ml. I'd feel comfortable with 0.10ml if you are having trouble with measurements .

P.S. 1ml = 1cc should you need that little knowledge gem :).

Howdy Edgar,

Cleaning-up around my PC I found some old notes regarding Toltrazuril (Baycox). I noted that someone named Barbara said that it is dosed at 20mg of Toltrazuril per kilogram of chameleon weight (20mg/kg). I'm curious what strength your vet prescribed. The strength should be listed as a mg/ml spec. If it isn't on the bottle, call them and check. It will be good to collect this kind of info and get it posted for future reference :).

Also, how much does your chameleon weigh?

OK, so My vet has it at a strengh of 50g/ml the presentation is the one for pigs at 5%

Based on the info you have Dave, I asked her to give him 20mg/kg, if the cham is pretty much at .1kg, that brings us to give him .033ml, we plan to give him this during 3 days, wait 7 or 10 days and repeat.

What do you think?

Howdy Edgar,

That seems like a reasonable strategy. Just keep an eye on him for any signs of trouble. There is some suggestion that there could be serious side effects.

I saw that post on ADCHAM responding with this translated from German answer pasted below. It might be safer to do the - Day 1, Day 3, Day 5 dosing. That schedule may be suggesting that the drug might stay active longer than a day and could be building-up its strength too high. Otherwise, it seems to agree with what we know:

(Not sure what Tiergew - "TG" means )

Drug: Toltrurazil
1ml solution contains 50mg Toltrazuril
Dosage: 20 mg / kg Tiergew. - 3x - 1-3-5 Day
2 mg / 100 gr TG
1 ml = 50 mg
20 mg = 1000 g / TG
2 mg = 100 g / TG
0.04 ml = 2 mg = 100 g / TG

Translated from:

Wirkstoff: Toltrurazil
1ml Lösung enthält 50mg Toltrazuril
Dosierung: 20 mg/ kg Tiergew. - 3x - 1.-3.-5. Tag
2 mg / 100 gr TG
1 ml = 50 mg
20 mg = 1000 g/TG
2 mg = 100 g/TG
0,04 ml = 2 mg = 100 g/TG

Hi Dave,

I saw this too, but I couldn't understand (after translation) the answer, so dumbing it down a bit (hope you can help me) how much am I giving him on day 1, 3 and 5? (.04ml each day?)

Also he is not saying anything about a repeat after 10 days. (I'm wondering if I should just try to get the Ponazuril, he still in good shape).

BTW. Don Wells says hi!

Howdy Edgar,

Yep. Give 0.04ml on day 1, day 3, day 5. This drug may not need to be repeated in 10 days. More fecal tests will help you sort that out . If you didn't have any bad side-effects then another round of treatments after 10 days shouldn't be a big issue either way. If your chameleon is a quick eater, try injecting the Toltrazuril into a feeder and feed it right away.

Don Wells :). He and I chated when I joined ADCHAM. I think he may still have me confused with someone else he knew long ago . Great guy though :D.
