Earlier than you think.
Senegals and gracefuls were imported in great numbers and sold at circus, carnival and fair venues possibly as far back as the twenties?
They were sold with little chains that you could pin to your lapel and "wear your pet".
I don't imagine any of them lived too long.
There are old black and white pictures of panthers too, but I don't know from when exactly.
