Why do you think it is a false alarm... This can most typically indicate an issue if it is not in response to being upset by you. If it is happening without a stress response then the two most common reasons are it is far too hot or the chameleon may have a respiratory infection.

Chameleons do not just open their mouth. This is done in response to something going on.

My chameleon opens his mouth for no apparent reason every couple weeks. He seems otherwise quite healthy
