HELLO! new to here so thought i would introduce myself. and ask a Q too.

Obama the cham

New Member
hello all! im fond of the furom thing but new to chameleons tho. i have male ambilobe about 11 months now (mayb 10) i got him at 8 months and hes quite active! i live in SO~CAL for reffence purpose.

i have a different hobbie that makes me quite well at controlling temps, RH, (PH and PPms, and all kinds of fun stuff:D).

I have always found chameleons to be the most intreiging reptiles around and had found my guy here around my area. but about a week ago wen i woke i found him to have a crusty to almost gooey lookin substance in his right eye.

i gave him a gentle luke warm bath and used a wet Q tip to ease it out. it werked and i thought that was over...this morning it came back, i repeated the process (he DUG the hell out of it this time) but lookin for some input BIG TIME! this guy has become RANKED above my other hobby, witch is a VERY satisfying hobby in itsself.

i have a repti glo 18" 10.o bulb and a 100 watt night black heat bulb on the cage, its a 1 1/2 ft(W) X1 1/2 ft(D) X 3 ft (T) cage plenty of bendy vines, a Ficcus plant, and hes been on super worms, meal worms, and crickets, dusting with REPTIVITE vits (W/out D3) every other feeding. i have a repti glo 2.0 also, witch should i use? (got the 10 in now)

sorry if this is the wrong furom thing to put this under too

*pat on the back* It is awesome that you grow pot but maybe your cham is so baked he can't open his eyes.

I would ditch the 10.0 and the 2.0 and get a Reptisun 5.0.(linear not coil) Most of the members use this and we have great success with our chameleons. Also 100 watt heat bulb is too much! Get a 60 watt bulb for basking and you really don't need a heat bulb for night time unless your temps are getting below 60 degrees or so.You live in Cali so I am assuming it does not get THAT cold! If the eye isuues persists you are gonna need to get your chameleon to a vet and get some meds for that eye. It might be helpful it you would post a pic of your cham along with your set up. Also you need to be dusting your feeder with three supplements not just one. You should be using calcium w/d3 twice a month and a multi vitamin twice a month also. Also, are you gutloading your feeders? If so, what are you using?

Oh hes not around the smoke dood (him or the girls, i figure its bad for him, and its kinda murding the girls relative right in front of them, and buring them to ashes and enjoting it) i have an AC'd room that stays at 60, i should have come here earlier. but well looks like i got alot of reading to do on these guys.

i might sound juvy about it, but wats gutloading? jesus. as u can tell, i know NOTHING about retiles, just controling where they live. well even at that i aint even really sure where that should be now!

60 watt bulb for basking? wat kind of bulb, the black the actual one that has light? sorry if im a ??? asker, i really dig this dood alot.

can i get a couple reccomendations from ya as for vits??

Ok gutloading is what you feed your feeders. Chameleons can eat dubias roaches, crickets, locusts, superworms, silkworms, phoenix worms, waxworms, hornworms, which are the most common feeders. the roaches, crickets and superworms can all be fed fresh veggies and fruits. Some good ones are Kale, Romaine, Collard greens (dark leafy veggies) along with apples, carrots, melons, oranges etc. you need some type of hydration so oranges are good, some people use potatoes. They sell water cubes but they are not too nutritional. Basically gutloading is beefing up your feeder to be fed with vitamins and nutrients. Silkworms are an excellent feeder, but they mainly eat mulberry leaves or you can buy silkworm chow. There is a silkworm breeder in Californina called Coastal Silkworms, they also sell hornworms and a chow that they eat. As far as vitamins I use repcal herptivite for my multi, Sticky Tongue Farms for my calcium without d3 and Repcal for my calcium with d3.

carol, ur a godsend.

well hes acting much better, eye is open, No nasties from wat i can see neither. i DO in fact have flukers orange 3 cricket diet, go figure EVERYTHING i got is SHITY hahaa. well thanx for every bit of advice. looks like a FULL reapraisal of the whole situation is in order. OK, gotta get down to brass tax, ill post back with an update soon.

wat worms do u reccomend, i do like the sounds of pheinox worms?

SUB with me carol, PLEEZ!:D

Flukers are basically junk! Ditch the flukers!!! I have never used phoenix worms, just know they are somewhat popular to use. Crickets are great and most use those as a staple if you cannot handle the roaches. Which I can't! My cham gave up on eating crickets long ago so i have been feeding him the supers and silks. i would recommend them over phoenix. Also, waxworms are very fatty and meal worms (which I didn't mention ) can be fed but sparingly due to their hard exoskelton which can be hard to digest and pass.

yea Obama aint much for crickets neither actually, same two have been in there a day or so now, but the meals and supers he DIGS! this will just be my lil makeover project i guess. hahhaa AGAIN! thanx a boat load amigo.

A few other issues. His enclosure may be a bit small. I keep my adult panthers in 24 x24x 48. Also, what are you doing for humidity/drinking. It sounds like you have some work ahead of you. Good luck, we'd hate to see your cham end up Insane in the Membrane.

i know brotha, i do. but hes got a dripper in there, it drips every few minutes too, and i mist every so often. hes well hydrated and fead. no crazies over here hes chillin out right now. thank your for the worry tho bro. RH is at 60% right now

Welcome to the forum!

You may like to post your question about his eye issue in the "healt" section, along with all the answers to the "how to ask for help" sticky, which is found at the top of that forum section. It's possible he has an eye infection, but there are lots of other possibilities. A vet is the best way to get a final answer, but people here are happy to make suggestions.

Exposure to proper UVB, appropriate temperatures, supplements, a supply of well-fed/gutloaded insects, water and an appropriate cage set-up are all important for the well-being of your chameleon.

Appropriate cage temperatures aid in digestion and thus play a part indirectly in nutrient absorption.

Exposure to UVB from either direct sunlight or a proper UVB light allows the chameleon to produce D3 so that it can use the calcium in its system to make/keep the bones strong and be used in other systems in the chameleon as well. The UVB should not pass through glass or plastic no matter whether its from the sun or the UVB light.

Since many of the feeder insects have a poor ratio of calcium to phosphorus in them, its important to dust the insects before you feed them to the chameleon with a phos.-free calcium powder to help make up for it.

If you dust twice a month with a phos.-free calcium/D3 powder it will ensure that your chameleon gets some D3 without overdoing it. It leaves the chameleon to produce the rest of what it needs through its exposure to the UVB light. (Some UVB lights have been known to cause health issues, so the most often recommended one is the long linear fluorescent Repti-sun 5.0 tube light.) D3 from supplements can build up in the system but D3 produced from exposure to UVB shouldn't as long as the chameleon can move in and out of it.

Dusting twice a month with a vitamin powder that contains a beta carotene (prOformed) source of vitamin A will ensure that the chameleon gets some vitamins without the danger of overdosing the vitamin A. PrEformed sources of vitamin A can build up in the system and may prevent the D3 from doing its job and push the chameleon towards MBD. However, there is controversy as to whether all/any chameleons can convert the beta carotene and so some people give some prEformed vitamin A once in a while.

Gutloading/feeding the insects well helps to provide what the chameleon needs....so its important too.

Calcium, phos., D3 and vitamin A are important players in bone health and other systems in the chameleon (muscles, etc.) and they need to be in balance. When trying to balance them, you need to look at the supplements, what you feed the insects and what you feed the chameleon.
