Grow light and plant question

Alright, so I cant find the answer I am looking for in the search. I think its too general maybe?

1. Majesty palm, HUGE ones for 12 bucks at walmart. Toxic or non toxic? I read a post from Dankmeleon that most all palms are ok?

2. Florescent tube by GE says for plants and aquariums. F40
Use to highlight natural beauty and color of aquatic life and plants.
Specially designed to promote growth and flowering of plants/aquatic vegetation.
Contains a combination of phosphors which produce light rich in reds and blues.

Light out put. 1900 lumens

This wide spectrum lamp is an excellent lamp for planth growth. It differs from some other growth lamps because of its relatively high emission of far-red radiation whcih promots growth and flowering in many types of plants.

Good or bad?

Sorry I use pothos the most for inside. My schefs keep dying so I started thingking about plant lighting while shopping:rolleyes:

Anyone. Im still having a little trouble. I type in Palm tree and get a lot of west palm beach. I type grow lights, plant lights and get a ton of other stuff.

i have heard that those storebought "growlights" dont really help plants, but just make them look nicer. maybe they are just a supplement to natural light? im no expert, thats just what i have heard in the past. maybe someone else will know for sure?

I use those GE lights (green Box) on all my cages with the reptisun 5. It does help plant growth.

I have been able to stop leaves falling of a ficus using the bulb.

most palms are OK with the exception of a few. I believe the one you are talking about is fine.

Maybe this has already been posted and might be general knowledge..But Im new so this helps me a lot.
Safe plants

I have used a lot of different palm with no trouble at all.
I also use double tube fixtures with a plant light and a 5.0.

Thanks guys. I just didnt want to use something bad of course:) My schefs do fine outside but when I brought them in they all died. I know that trampling can also affect them. Ill see how a palm or 2 works. These things are like 5 feet tall! Cant beat that for 12 bucks.

Yes Ryan, green box. Thanks again

Let me ask, how do you keep them alive? I know most of you seem to keep them in the pots.. I tried planting Pothos in organic soil (we have worm composts) and they all died within a month! I just saw someone post a pygmy setup with soil so Im wondering, do you need a grow light? Maybe thats what im lackin but I thought Pothos were low light plants?

Hey blackbetty. Ram Jam?:) I use justplain old top soil for my pothos and they have all done fine in or out and I am going to start using the grow lights. They love all the water that goes into the cage also. Maybe your soil didnt stay wet enough. Im not sure and not a plant expert either.

I am surprised of how many people think you are growing pot when buying things like vermiculite, grow lights, multiple pots, etc. They all look at me like OH I know what you are doing LOL. Ive had this happen multiple times. After you tell them what you are really doing then they have 100 questions about them which is cool because I like to talk about chams:) Just thought it was funny and would throw that out there.

Haha..:) Her name was Big Momma but black betty came to mind..shes rather chunky..LOL..and she likes to get dark and mean at me. Ha..
I think my soil was too moist? I use a little dripper that seems to work overtime. I swear I think it turn it down and Im hearing the constant dripping in my sleep! Maybe they got rootrot? I have one in a pot right now in bettys cage I just rooted yesterday away from water and only gets misting..guess Ill see how it goes. Thanks for the advice though.. and Yea, Im prolly one of those people that would be winking at ya, keeping your secret hobby safe. LOL!

When I worked at Home Depot in the Garden Departments you wouldn't believe how many people told me that they WERE growing pot.

Wow..not info I would dispense openly! Haha..

Yeah that is pretty stupid of someone. I come right out and tell the person what I am using it for after they give me the look hahaha. I wouldnt want to be associated with that.

1500 kelvin

1500k fluorescents is minimum required for plants. I use them on all my dart frog vivariums and my veiled setup. they even have compact bulbs for lamps. The fluorescent bulbs that say plant and aquarium are crap.

These are by far the best fluorescent grow bulbs on the market .
They come in 3000k and 6500k.

I use a 2700k(color) Phillips 600 lumens T12 bulb from Home Depot.

Reptisun 5.0 come in a t12 format.

Therefore, I have to use a t12 bulb for my other light in my dual fixture ;p probably not AS GOOD but works pretty sweet for me :)

Actually I think they come in different colors and I just picked the green packaged one that says "Plant and Aquarium"
I would have prefered the color of the full spectrum bulb I used to use in my 55gal show (4') fishtank. I think it was a 36" bulb and the color was great like natural light combined with an almost black light that made the colors really come out on my fish. It was probably a t5 bulb. Wasn't sure if it would be good for my cham and this Phillips is almost like a normal florescent, just a redish tinge that I think is supposed to make plants flower more. I know my hibiscus is growing ALOT better now that I started using it!
