Giant Flame Chameleon?????????

was at a pet store today and they had a chameleon in there listed as a Giant Flame Chameleon for $200. Body was grey and had red spots all over.. not uniform spots just spots all over.. and when i picked him up he he flared up and and had white spots across his ribs... What kinda chameleon is this.. I never heard of this type of cham before..

I want a panther chameleon and i like this one in the pet store but dont know what type he actually is and they just told me he was a madagascar chameleon...and dont know if they are chargeing too much...

Anyone have any ideas
 
Can you post a picture? 'Giant flame chameleon' isn't ringing any bells...sounds like some kid working at the store thought that'd be a cool name.
 
Post a picture of it and we can tell you better...

also, we can tell you if they have a proper setup for it at the pet store
 
Went to Petco for the first time in awhile. They had a poor little Vieled chameleon in a glass aquarium. It was shaking real badly D:
 
sounds like they have no idea what they have..... ive got a "mega awesome triceratops chameleon" that dosnt change the fact thats its a jacksons. if its a panther as it sounds it most likely is a decent buy at $200 if its in good condition. i doubt you can get a locale out of em if its advertized as a ..."giant flame chameleon" if you can find out what it is and where it came from ill offer you $20 and shipping on it if you can provide some pics. as long as you can talk em down to $120 :P

I went to petsmart when they were "caring for" the baby veiled we have here in town. I'd say 2 months tops and it was labeled as a juvenile. Standing water and crickets immediately burying into the substrate moss they were using must have been the theme that day. The locally owned pet store has a female veiled I'd say 1-2 years. I asked the owner if he would show her to me and he just plunged his hand in there with no regard for her and when she fought him he just yanked her out. Then he proceeded to talk about the panthers he bred once. Chameleon breeder my @$$.
 
The petco in my area actually just had two veileds as well. When they arrived both seemed to be in pretty good shape, healthy, active and cute little babies. However due to the lack of knowledge the staff possesses the chameleons deteriorated very quickly. The only feeder they provided them with was mealworms, they housed them in glass terrariums, and also had water bowls in the cage of these baby chams. I'm sure they also never misted to provide extra humidity or the chance to drink either. One was purchased while still healthy, but the other one unfortunately didn't make it. I was thinking about rescuing the poor cham but the shop wasn't willing to negotiate price and the cham was in such bad condition the chance of survival was probably less than 15% anyways. It was quite heartbreaking.
 
Its Heart breaking the neglect these beautiful creatures suffer at the hand of ignorance. I am a former worker at one of these pet chains and looking back at it, their policies are disgusting. No Specific care for these animals and no real consideration for the creatures natural habits. They attempt to provide the bare minimum, in a chameleons case, yes a water bowl, the " little dripper" drip system, and a bowl of Mealworms is constantly inside, where the little buggers crawl out and escape into the soil. Animals were misted once in the morning and once at night. Never in between and if no one forgot to do them all in the sake of time that is.

Care of other reptiles, and in my opinion aquatics is horribly inadequate. When i had my monitor, i had rescued her from one of these Pet Chains where she, a savannah monitor which is a species known to burrow, was only kept in 1cm deep of substrate, with a log that she could not hide under, and a bowl that was far too small for her to even attempt to soak in.

Lots of their fish are put into tanks with horribly incompatible species that often lead to one or both of the species getting stressed out. I've been breeding fish for a while and its truly heartbreaking to see these creatures treated in such a way. Plecos going without true veggies to munch on which is a must have when keeping them ( one that is almost always neglected:mad:) and the most devastating part of all of this is the DELIBERATE of placing smaller or more timid species of fish in tanks with aggressive antagonistic species so that the smaller fish become stressed and produce vivid coloration.

Needless to say i am fed up with most large chain petstores and only purchase animals from at the very least responsible, and usually locally owned pet stores whom know what they are doing and feel a sense of duty to their guests ( the creatures they're keeping). When i do go into these chain store i love to offer my knowledge to those whom are working there and are acting as these animals caretakers because as we all know, some information comes with time and experience and is highly beneficial information to those working there. I love to teach and am more then willing to help out ( even constantly searching for someone to help out if i can) yet sadly , as we all know some people are not working there for the animals under their care. they want a paycheck more then anything else and if they can cut corners they will.:(

I will try to get some pics in the next day or so.. its a new family owed pet store and they dont get too much buisness as of yet...I looked at some pics of the oustalets and the red is there but the high crown on his head wasnt.. he wasnt a baby. head to tail was 12" + so its not like he was a couple months old or nothing..

As for the cage setup, it was your basic petsmart glass display.. with very little camoflage for him 1 small twig to crawl on and huge water dish :confused: . thank you for all the replies.. i will try to get pics asap..
 
ok.. i got the scoop ya'll....I talked to the owner in the back.. a lil behind the scenes conversation .....He said the Giant Flame Chameleon was a man made mix...

A Giant Chameleon and a Panther Chameleon bred together.. and yes it was sold....

Well, that was rather anticlimactic. Now we know....nothing more than before. Ah, will the mystery never be solved? Was he suggesting it was an oustaleti bred with a panther?

Malagasy Giant and panther mix.. most were right yes it was the furcifer oustaleti

I'm pretty sure it was not intended to be rude.

What are you implying by saying most were right? Are you saying that the animal was a hybrid or that it was not a hybrid and was a F.oustaleti?

"Malagasy Giant" could be one of two species.

Sorry. It was not meant in the least bit to be rude. I was questioning whether the owner was suggesting it was a panther mixed with an oustaleti, because the term "giant chameleon" is not definitive. Not because of you at all, just that the situation (history of the cham in question) was still ambiguous. You created a very intriguing thread, and really even moreso if people are claiming to produce Pantheleti :o.
