Foam wall clear coat??

I am turning an old display cabinet into a home for my veiled. I have bought some Styrofoam sheeting to make a rock wall/ 3d background which will extend out on the sides to the side of the cage as well. I am also going to be using some of the "Great Stuff".
I am planning on using a dermal tool to make some texture, shapes, rocks, vines etc.
I am planing on painting the background with some acrylic paints to add a lot of detail then sealing it all in.
Should I be using Shellac or can I use some clear coat?
Will my acrylic paints be fine for him because its going to be sealed in?

I don't really want the finish to be too shiny because my little dinosaur loves to climb the background he has now.

I have looked through the forums and most people seem to be using grout or cement. I dont want it to be so hard and rough for him.

I have never used either of these with my cages but maybe some other member have experience with it.
