Flash play

This morning when I got up Henry was roosting in a perfect place to take photos.... So I got out my new flash and it's goodies and played around.

The first shot is using the camera's flash... see how it casts a harsh shadow?

This next shot is with my 550EX mounted to the camera but facing 90* perpendicular to the flash (up)

This next shot is using my ring flash on the lens and I am holding my 550EX below Henry... not shooting up under him directly but forward of him and aimed up at him. I made no adjustments to the ring flash light ratio.... (It has two flash tubes. I have them so one was on top of the lens and one was on bottom and firing at the same power.)

This next shot I adjusted the top flash tube to fire stronger than the lower flash tube.... now there is no shadow from the 550EX on the wall :)

I can't wait to play some more later on :D

For anyone who is thinking "WTF are is a ring flash" it is a flash that mounts on the end of the lense. It is mostly meant for macro photography but can be used in portraits as a fill in flash (take shadows out of the eyes or under the nose or under a hat.....) There are two models of 'macro' flashes. One is a higher end model and then the lower end model. The MR-14EX (the one I have) is the lower end model. The big boy is called the MT-24EX. The two biggest differences; the flash 'heads' of the MT-24 can be removed from the flash ring and mounted in other positions if used with an accessory that allows this. The MR-14EX has the flash heads mounted to a plastic ring, not allowing them to be moved other than rotating the ring to position the heads at different angles to the subject. The orientaton of the two lights from one another, always stays the same.

This is a Link to an ebay auction (not mine) but gives you an idea of what the flash looks like.

Getting good with that flash! Thats really neat!

I am just learning my ring flash. I picked it up on Sunday and only used it once or twice since then. This morning I wanted to try out the wireless remote trigger features with my 550EX. I really need to get a proper lense to use the ring flash with. It fits on my 18-55mm IS II.... but that lens rotates the end element to focus.. causing the flash to rotat. This isn't a big deal because I get the lens near the focal point I want and then mount the flash. Once in position the lens only needs to rotate a small amount to be in focus.

The best part will be the lighting tricks that can be done with multiple flashes :D

I know this is all about the camera and the flash but I keep coming back to look at the pictures. Your mellers is just beautiful. Still wish I had bought the one at the Pasadena show.:(

If you get a softening cover for your flash, or just put a thin white sheet over it you can take pictures with the flash pointing straight ahead and get some nice soft shadows and still have the real color of the chameleon show up in a dimly lit situation. Kinda like studio photography but portable and easy :)

BTW I love your melleri, He/She is gorgeous.

Thanks for the compliment! I am pretty sure he is a he... I only think this because I saw what I thought to be his hemipenes...

I am pretty sure you will still get a shadow with the flash mounted on the camera regardless of using the diffuser that is built into the flash. Unless you have a lot of ambient light and the flash is a filler, a shadow will show up. The worst part is that when you shoot portrait the shadow shoots off to the side and is even more visible (as you can see in the first shot). I am interested to try one of those little diffuser blocks you put on the end of the flash. I really wanna try the Gary Wong diffuser.

Yeah I know you will get a shadow without a backlight. I'm just saying it would be softer, that is only if you want it there. I alway love taking pictures with deep shadows and high, high contrast. It's probably because I have to do studio photography a ton of the time, I refer my side job taking pictures of concerts. Atleast you have an idea what sex he is. Alot of people have no idea with their melleri :) I have b\been planning on getting a melleri for quite awhile now but no perfect one for me has come up yet. I want a younger one, CB or CH would be nice but I would take a WC juvy too. My free ranges are calling their name. Hopefully I will deem my care fit enough for one soon. I think i'm gunna wait till after my 150+ panther eggs hatch though so it can get more attention from me and not get ignored for the babies. Good luck with him, He looks great for being a WC melleri.

Henry Rocks!

Forget the camera chat....Henry Rocks! He has such a great expression that shines through. It's like he's saying "OK Kevin, I've let you play with your toy for quite a while. I've sat for these portraits with great patience. How about paying me back with a snack?"

Wish I was a camera nerd instead of a math/numbers nerd. I'm so dependant on Royden. He brings over all his accessories when he visits. I just play assistant and give him things when he asks for them.

Hope to see you entering photos in future contests...........
