Feeding

Hello! I’m new to owning my female veiled chameleon and was wondering about how much she should be getting fed and opinions on her age. I’m unsure about her age but I’m guessing she is young as about 1-3 months old as she is a few inches long. As of right now since I’ve only had her for a few days she’s been getting fed mealworms but I read it isn’t recommended so I am definitely planning on switching her food! Here are some pictures of her

I am estimating your chameleon is between 3-6 months of age. I would switch to a diet mostly of crickets. I good approach is to use an insect feeder to allow your chameleon to always have access to food especially with a young growing chameleon.

Best Regards

Thank you! As I feed her mealworms until I switch her food how many do you think are a good amount? I don’t want any blockage or anything to happen

With female veiled chameleons in particular, if they are not kept in a particular fashion (diet, temperature wise, etc) they can produce too many follicles/eggs and become eggbound and develop follicular stasis…so as they approach sexual maturity, you want to make sure you control their feeding and environment to prevent it. With proper care they can live for at least 7 years…without it they will likely only live a year or two.

This might help…

These may help you. Providing a variety of healthy insects is best. I don’t specifically ‘gutload’, but I do keep my feeders well fed a variety of fresh organic produce (the same items I feed to my bearded dragons) and Repashy Bug Burger to round things out. The various gels and such which are available at most pet stores are not very good for more than hydrating your bugs.
Many on line vendors sell variety packs of species specific feeders, which are great for those with just 1-2 insectivores. Check out the forum sponsors, who are fantastic businesses. If you are in the south or south east, try https://lindasgonebuggie.myshopify.com/
While I’m here, I need to play mother hen and ask if you wouldn’t mind posting some pics of your girl’s enclosure. Just want to make sure all is correct, so that your cutie stays healthy and happy for years to come.

A dozen or so crickets for now a day, you will back off soon when she hits 8 ish months I think. (I don’t have females just going off memory)
Sounds good.
