When you remove the lid to your dubia colony, to replace food, do NOT back into it, and trip. There is a good chance you will hit the floor hard, and dubia will FLY through the air, and land all over you, and the floor. When this happens, it scares them, and they take off in ALL directions, and they are much scarier when there are 30+ adults crawling all over you(this will likely scare you as well).
You will come to the immediate conclusion that you MUST do SOMETHING about recollecting them, but as they scurry for cover(and crawl all over you) you will realize that your mind is blank with sheer horror.
When you finally start scrambling to recollect them, you will repeatedly tell yourself how incompetent you are, this will go on for hours, until you have searched every nook and cranny, and disassembled and reassembled EVERYTHING in said room. After the "ordeal" is over, you will still not be able to shake the fact that there is a very good chance you did not find them all, and you will be paranoid forever.

OMG, did you dump all those bugs I sent you. I am hoping you had them in more than one container. You had way, way more than just thirty Dubai. I hope Stella & Donahue have been eating lots of bugs. Sorry, but David has to stop the show we were watching as i was just rolling laughing.

No worries!
They didnt all fly out, just some. I estimated about thirty,
I got all them back though! I swear! :eek:

They have been eating lots and lots yes, Donahue is especially fat and lumpy looking :)

They are breeding like crazy btw! I am going to have to separate the nymphs tomorrow.

I have three seperate containers for nymphs, breeders and feeders,
I knocked over my breeder bin:mad:

"dubias"... cough cough... right lauri ;)

funny post! i find that they like to hide in your bed. mostly under the pillows. and hide in your ears.

you're welcome :)

HAHAHA classic...seriously every single time i pull the roaches down and i mean every single time. I picture myself loosing grip and dropping the whole thing.
Honestly, Id move out if i were you. Break the lease, sell the house, hell if it doesnt sell let the bank take it but id move out. Only take your chams and your tooth brush! LIL' bastids could be hiding anywhere!j/k

lol, thats nothing, 2 years ago, i was 15 and i bought 2000 crickets, largest ammount i had ever gotten, they were all pinheads, and i had 4 fruit fly cultures, they were in a large card board box, as they were from the same comapany. I pulled them out opened them and went to go get their 'homes' ready. My Sister was having an argument with my dad, you know 12 year old teenage girl having a hissy fit, Im getting really pissed off cause i cant find my cricket box, and i yelled shut up as loud as i could, she came into the room, and slammed my door shut, which kocked over both of the cricket boxes which were on a upside down cardboard box, when i rushed down stairs to see what happened, i kocked over 3 of the cultures, 2000 pinhead crickets and a couple hundred fruitflies, all over the house, i can not explain how pissed my dad from SICILY was. his face was solid red, sicilian italians have a serious temper, i fled to my friends house for 2 days to hide, lol

Edit: i had to take the exterminating costs out of my allowance and i had to build a shed for all my chameleons and geckos to go while the scent was still in the house. I was broke for a year

I am always thinking to myself, "How in the do people have escapees? Arent they careful?" :rolleyes:

Now, now I know how the "accidents" happen:eek:

I had the bin in the middle of the floor, so it was out of place, and was carrying a bunch of veggies in my hands, I turned to close the door, and then backed up/turned and hit the dubia bin. -_-
(the fruit and veggies werent fun to clean up either)

The worst i had was 200-300 mantid nymphs scattered in my room..... long story... if i feel something tingly on my neck or leg...its a mantid :p

lol, ur lucky they werent crickets, if that happened to me with dubias, i wouldnt even be able to contact exterminators or anything since they are illeagal because of the risk of escape. :)

Before I sent dubia out to several forum buddies, I had a way big amount. But if they got lose, in 6500 sq ft it would be a complete nightmare. Mine are housed in a 5ft long, by 2ft wide by 3 ft tall aquarium and it has a custom lid made out of screen and angle iron. For those of you who don't know, dubia don't climb and angle iron weights a ton, but that is what it takes for me to have dubia & make hubby happy.

Lol, I immediately thought to myself, "Why isnt this container heavier!"

I briefly contemplated making a counter-weight for the bottom, but scrapped that idea.

The new plan is to not mess up, ever, never, ever ever ever...again...

Dang Laurie I want to come to your house just to see your dubia set up haha ;)
That sucks my daughter has set free 1 male so far that I know of :-/

Laurie...If i lived in a 6500 sq ft home. I cant even think of how many chameleons i could fit in there..its gotta be close to a million.

There was I time when I had about 25 adults and lots of babies. But that will never happen again. If I have that many chams I can't even leave for 2 days.:eek: Now I have 3 adults, 1 baby and no eggs. On Tuesday I send an adult out and get another baby. That will be it until I get 2 more baby quads from two of the guys who have eggs cooking. I plan to stop a 2.2 quads and for now 0.0.2 melleri. Now you understand how I can have a whole room for 1 cham to free range in. I also will free range both Melleri when they grow up. Not sure about the other 3 quads. I will do a little quad breeding but that is it. I like to travel and if I have lots of chams hubby will not take time off work and stay home with them. As long as I stay under 10, he will baby sit a couple weeks a year, but he and I never get to go together much.:(

A standard minimum for ceiling height is 8'

6500x8=52000

Now assuming most chameleons could be fit in a 6"x6"x6" space, that would mean we could fit 4 chameleons in one square foot.

52000x4=208000

So no, not even close to one million. The most you could theoretically fit in a 6500sqft house, would be 208,000.;)

Im no mathematician though, especially after a few drinks ;/
