Crossing

The Cham Man

OK, I've been diving into research. I think cross-breeding a chameleon species is possible, while it must be in the same genus, I think it could happen. Both from the genus furcifer and co-existing in the wild, I think a likely compatibility would be a oustalet's female x panther male. So I need expert opinions, hence posting this thread, so I'm open to opinions.

Is it possible.. maybe.

It's been documented that the oustalet's and Panthers have mated and reproduced in the wild. I remember seeing a picture floating around that was supposed to be the cross.

There is actually a member on the forum who is in the process of attempting this as we speak. They may have successfully mated a oustalet's female and panther male and have eggs. Whether they are fertile or not who knows.. waiting game time.

I would advice from doing so, last thing we want is that the chameleon community goes in the same directions as snakes, no need to cross breed species

I think it is unlikely.

These two species co-exist in the same habitat in the wild.

If it could happen between these two, I think it probably already would in the wild on occasion.

I had a friend who successfully crossed a Furcifer oustaleti female with a Furcifer pardalis male.

The result was some rather gangly looking chams that for some reason didn't survive to full adult hood.

Who knows if this was the result of defective genetics or some problem in husbandry but its funny that all out of a clutch of 8 died at around the exact same age +- a few months.

Sometimes hybridizing closely related species creates a very strong vigorous offspring. Sometimes it doesn't

I would rather see the chameleon community focus on species specific husbandry techniques instead of tinkering around with genetic hybridization.

Just because it is possible doesn't mean it should be done...
