Converting a Cabinet/Bookcase

Say if i want to convert a nice sized cabinet/bookcase into a chameleon enclosure how would I go about making it sorta waterproof? Do i use the polyurethane(sp?) stain or the latex paint or something? This is so the wood doesnt rot or soak up so much of the humidity.

Then after the sides are coated add some mesh to the front/back/top. I live in New York and its not very humid here all year round. Even I get a dry throat during the winter So mayb I might go for solid sides and back.

You could line the interior with a plastic board, such as; corroplast (Corrugated plastic), showerboard liner, rubber pond fabric, etc...

that sticks to the side of the wood and water wont be able to seep through?
