I thought the same thing. I’m still not entirely convinced. But I saw the back of his/her feet and there didn’t seem to be any spurs. I guess I’m just all around confused haha. I’ll try to get a picture of the feet and the mysterious substance coming from the hemipenal area.

Male Veild chameleons have spurs, male panther chameleons do not. I would get a new vet if possible imo. Sorry for your troubles. Good looking guy otherwise!

Yeah panthers do not have spurs, that's pretty disappointing to hear from a supposed professional! I hope the rest of the care that Danny is receiving from the vet is better than this. Nevertheless, he's still incredible!

Update on Danny after today’s vet visit! Everything looked great although they asked me to bring In a fecal.

This was the picture I showed on this forum and we collectively decided she was he. Danny.

Well today at the vet they noticed ‘he’ didn’t have tarsal Spurs. They sexed him and turns out it’s a she after all. Apparently just a very large she.

I had thought I was seeing sperm deposits. There’s definitely some white substance coming from her that isn’t urate. And it looks a lot like a sperm deposit.

OMG I hate when vets treat animals that they do not even know how to tell gender for. Veiled chameleons are differentiated by a tarsal spur being present or not. NOT a Panther. Your vet has no clue about the basics between two totally different chameleons.

You have a male Panther chameleon.

I would consider finding a vet with chameleon experience.

Oh my goodness! I had no idea about the male panthers not having spurs. I just assumed that applied to all chameleons. I took pictures of the back feet anyways.

Unfortunately he’s the only exotic vet in my area until I move for college. I guess I should’ve been concerned when his technicians said she’d never seen a panther in person before.
I’m honestly relieved it’s a male. I was so stressed over the egg laying process.

Also a picture of a sperm deposit I found. An older and wet one because I had just misted.

The vet was very nice otherwise, I think! The techs were amazed at him and gave lots of compliments.

You shouldnt know that about tarsal spurs being brand new. But your vet should lol.

They also said it was very unusual for a pet store to be carrying an adult panther, and that usually they’re babies.
I don’t know anything about that and I definitely can’t figure out where this pet store sources their chameleons.
He also weighs about 100g if anyone could tell me if that’s normal. For a 1-2 year old panther

Its a little light for an adult male. But this also depends on his total length. If he is smaller then weight wouldnt be too low. Try to get a length from tip of nose to the vent (where he poops).

I’ve owned snakes before and we NEVER used a tool to sex them. I’ve never even heard of that but like you said, I am new to chameleons. He seems okay though. Once he got settled I fed him a few dubias which he very happily ate.

I do think he’s getting ready to shed and I can see very brought green under a patch of skin that’s already come off!

I’ll try and measure him soon. Previous owner told me the pet store had no idea how old he is but estimated 1-2.

So with the fecal. They need to test it first and if it comes back positive treat it with the specific med for the parasite. Please update us here if it comes back positive. Certain parasites require specific cage cleaning.

She only had him for 2 weeks. Maybe 3 weeks at most.

I’m going to try and take the fecal in tomorrow after work. He just dropped some after I put him back in. It’s a smaller amount than usual but it’ll do for the testing.

Perfect pop it in a plastic baggy and stick it in the fridge so it is fresh.

The results from Danny’s fecal sample. Very sad to see. Thankfully the treatment is inexpensive and easy. I’m not sure how he got them or how long he’s had them.

I also know that some of them go into the lungs and other areas of the body which then makes them more difficult to treat. Also you have to be aware that treating them when there's a heavy number can result in an overload on the immune and kill the chameleon.

I only know that ascarids cause asthma like symptoms. At least in dogs. Which might explain the weird blowing sound he makes occasionally which I thought was a hiss

Any tips on how to give him the medicine orally? He doesn’t really like being touched and I have no idea how to get his mouth open long enough to give him the stuff

If you can get him eating or drinking you can often sneak the meds in with a needleless syringe while the noughts opening and shutting....but do not squirt it in...ease it in.

You can do it like this too...but be very careful not to injure the lips by pushing hard or the teeth by scraping the syringe along them...
